Mussab Ali (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View log | edits since nomination)

The PROD tag was removed by a brand-new editor, but I concur that this is not a notable local politician per WP:POLITICIAN, and that the page reads more like a resume for future political aspirations than that of a school board member / 4th place runner up candidate for Jersey City Mayor, as cited by User:Cmahns in the PROD.

Furthermore, the sources cited in the article are not the required WP:SIGCOV needed to establish notability. A review of the sources at the point of this nomination shows that they are promotional / puff pieces / press releases / announcements (sources 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 11, 14, 18, 19), generic local news / statistics (6, 7, 12, 26, 33, 34), passing mentions (9, 10), cancer diagnosis (15, 16), candidate summaries (20, 21, 24, 25, 31, 32), interviews (23), endorsements (27, 28, 29, 30) or not found (13). There are many sources, but they don't add up to notability, either per WP:POLITICIAN or WP:GNG. Alansohn (talk) 01:05, 7 April 2026 (UTC)reply

  • Keep per sourcing. While I don't think political candidates are notable for a run, Ali was elected to a (local) board. Not enough for notability but it puts him a step above others. The coverage from both campaigns has reached a national level- it is not simply a local candidate running for minor offices a couple times. (Teen Vogue from Jersey City mayor, Jewish Insider from congressional run.) Not my strongest keep vote but passes in my eyes. Yoblyblob (Talk) :) 17:03, 8 April 2026 (UTC)reply
I agree with keep, but it was not just elected to a local board, he was the board president and was the youngest elected muslim in the county at one point. This is not mentioned in the article but he was also co-president of the harvard student body.
Plus, more just about this general discussion, this seems to be a competitive primary he is coming towards and the sources do feel substantial enough to make him notable. I think the editors were biased as this reads like a resume, so it needs editing, but it deserves to be kept. ~2026-14194-85 (talk) 17:49, 17 April 2026 (UTC)reply
  • Keep I am generally skeptical of the notability of politcal candidates (as I think generally they should be redirected). In this case, I am convinced by two sources that are primarily about the subject - the 2021 NJ.com article and the Teen Vogue profile (there is significant coverage before the interview). While I agree with the nominator that there is a lot of coverage that would not add up to notability, if we focus on the two best sources, I think the subject does pass WP:GNG. --Enos733 (talk) 15:21, 9 April 2026 (UTC)reply
  • Redirect to 2026 United States House of Representatives elections in New Jersey#District 8 - subject does not meet notability guidelines and as the nominator has highlighted, there is only routine election or local coverage, not nearly enough for significant coverage that shows that this subject is any more notable than the many candidate pages that have been redirected recently. Wikipedia requires a high standard of robust and enduring coverage and evidence of notability for a local politician page to be retained, which this page clearly fails to demonstrate - I don't see why we should apply an exception here. Did you see my comment above? I shared 14 additional sources that could be included in the article that are not yet. Some are discussing him being the youngest Muslim elected official in the country, others about him being the youngest city official in city history, others about policy he helped pass while in office, and even some more is regional coverage after he left office about what he was up to. All of that is when he was not a candidate in any election. How is that "only routine election or local coverage"? Edittttor (talk) 17:07, 15 April 2026 (UTC)reply

We have regularly recognized that whether an "interview" counts towards notability is not a yes or no binary. The amount of content, the source/interviewer, the topic of discussion all are considerations we should consider (See this discussion). In the Teen Vogue article there are five paragraphs of prose before the article gets into the interview. - Enos733 (talk) 16:06, 14 April 2026 (UTC)reply
I think you should re-read the Teen Vogue article. Of the 5 paragraphs of Prose that you mentioned, Paragraph 1+2 is about mostly about Mamdani, Paragraph 3 is a mention that he was on the JC BOE and gives his platform. Paragraph 4+ 5 are high profile people (Tlaib, Khanna, Omar, CAIR Action) who endorsed Ali. The only quote from anyone about Ali was from Ilhan Omar who said: “Local leadership matters more than ever. I came here because Mussab is fighting and because what happens here matters everywhere in this country," Please describe for me anywhere in that article (in both the preamble to the interview and the interview) that wasn't routine election coverage about a non-notable local candidate.
I would actually look at WP:IV for determining whether an interview is Notable. Part of this discussion uses the pushback of the interviewer as litmus test for whether or not the interview is Notable. This interview was a 7 question softball Q&A with zero pushback, which makes the Teen Vogue article fall under WP:NOTPROMOTION.
One thing I didn't mention before is that this article should also be redirected to 2025 Jersey City mayoral election in addition to the 2026 United States House of Representatives elections in New Jersey#District 8 Cfgauss77 (talk) 20:05, 14 April 2026 (UTC)reply
I appreciate your evaluation of the prose, but I come to a different conclusion. There is a bunch of biographical details in paragraph 3, paragraph 2 describes his ideology and religion, and paragraph 1 alludes to a strong social media presence the subject is known for. And then I look at the publication source - a national, well regarded publication, the fact that it is part of a series of candidates that may embody the 2025 election cycle, and that multiple members of Congress are endorsing in a local race far from their districts suggests that the subject is more than a normal candidate. If the Teen Vogue article was the only source that would meet GNG, I would want to see more, but in this instance, I still believe the 2021 NJ.com article is in-depth about the subject, and the other sources, while they may not independently be sufficient, allow us to write a substantial article about the subject. - Enos733 (talk) 22:41, 14 April 2026 (UTC)reply
Thank you very much for such constructive dialogue.  There are a couple of things regarding the Teen Vouge article that were brought up that I feel does not meet the standards for Significant Coverage.  WP:YTN is an article that discusses why social media presence is not a valid metric for notability.  The first two paragraphs are just comparing Ali to Mamdani (it does mention that Ali was the youngest candidate in the Jersey City mayoral race, which is routine). The third paragraph sources the January 2021 NJ.com piece and his personal foundation, but it is mostly just a summary of the January 2021 NJ.com article.  In July 2021, there was a proposed article for Creation for Mussab Ali that was denied.  That means that when Ali was JC BOE president and after the January 2021 NJ.com article was published, Ali’s case for a stand alone Wikipedia article was reviewed and it was deleted. In conclusion, I feel that none of the sources material passes WP:SIGCOV and his current resume as a politician (3 years JC BOE member, 4th place in JC mayoral election, candidate for NJ-8 Congress) fails WP:NPOL.
