Test if my mentee

Considering an upgrade to test whether the user placing the template is actually the mentor of the user whose Talk page it is. A question arises what to do, if the substing editor is not the destination Talk page user's mentor: error out with a big red message, or go ahead and place the message, maybe with a change of language from 'I am your mentor and available to answer your questions' to 'Your mentor so-and-so is available for questions' and so on. Feedback

I'm still trying out the new template, but wanted to check if you had come across Template:WelcomeMenu. I find it a bit too much information, whereas all the other welcomes have perhaps too little. Mujinga (talk) 13:11, 24 December 2025 (UTC)

Another minor point is here you have "Usage: subst:Welcome mentee" with no four tildes and at "Usage: subst:Welcome mentee brief" it is followed by four tildes. Mujinga (talk) 13:15, 24 December 2025 (UTC)

Hi, Mujinga, and thanks for the feedback! I added the tildes; thanks for catching that. I have seen {{WelcomeUser}} in passing, but never used it. There are other templates structured like that one, as a big box filled with links and icons; see the ones listed under WP:WT#graphical, for example. I rarely use that style, unless I get the feeling someone is young and might respond to that kind of busy layout, but it's usually just guesswork based on not much, so I tend to stay away from them.

I hear you about the too-much/too-little issue. One way to deal with this is by having optional parameters which add a little bit of text to the message, which you can select or leave out. For example, since you first wrote, new parameter |project= has been added, which adds an invitation to joining a WikiProject. For example, adding |project=Women in Red would add this sentence right after the words "Task center" in the middle of the message:

Based on your contributions, you might want to consider joining WikiProject Women in Red.

Are there other things that you find are "too little" in this template? We could always have some mix-and-match sentences that could be added under parameter control, like the way you can add a WikiProject invitation now with param |project=. Feel free to suggest anything you think could be useful.

One other change you might have missed is that in addition to the original six images, there are now also four collages, so that if you pick |image=biography for example, instead of a single image like cookies or fruit, you get this collage added to the right side of the message (along with an invitation to wikiproject Biography, so you don't have to specify the project). Enhancement: validation of project param status

Propose enhancing the validation of |project=, using template {{WikiProject status}}. When the value is Inactive, Defunct, or Draft then suppress the linkage. (And semi-active?) Mathglot (talk) 22:09, 10 June 2026 (UTC)

Enhancement: ensure a mentor is logged in

As only registered users can be mentors, if a mentor is unaware of not being logged in, we could detect this in the template so a mentor doesn't leave a message saying a temp account is their mentor. This has occurred in the wild, so it may occur again. Mathglot (talk) 08:21, 3 July 2026 (UTC)
