We should add a spelling example of a word with the -ise suffix (e.g., realise, organise, etc.) so that that pattern is made clear as well. Otherwise as it stands, from the set of examples, it could pass as Oxford spelling or the like. Getsnoopy (talk) 20:27, 31 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Getsnoopy: There is one major difference between Indian and British English, and that is numbering. Indian English in formal publications uses lakh (1,00,000 - yes, with these commas) and crore (1,00,00,000 - again, with these commas).
Delhi Travel Guide 2020 notes: "Though these terms come from Sanskrit, they have been adopted so deeply into Indian English that most people are not aware that they are not standard in other English dialects." (the same source also notes the different comma placement in India)
The articles need to cater to international audiences, so India-related articles should use both "Western" and Indian numbering.
@WhisperToMe: Well that is separate to the issue I brought up, which is that in the template, colour, travelled, centre, analysed, defence all validate as Oxford spelling as well. So we need to add an example with the -ise suffix of words (e.g., recognise, organise, etc.) so that it is distinguished from Oxford spelling and shows that it follows British spelling.
Nevertheless, to your point, while the Indian numbering system is prevalent in reliable sources in Indian English, this topic has been debated extensively and basically the consensus is to not use it (or at least not have it as primary) in WP articles because of MOS:COMMONALITY. @Getsnoopy: On point one I agree! On point two I would be interested in reading the discussions re: this consensus. Since the use of lakh/crore is so engrained in India. I used the format Western numbering (Indian numbering, conversion to foreign currencies) in some articles related to air crashes. That way it caters to both Western readers and South Asian ones. Please remove the empty line at the start of the template. It leads to unwanted vertical space if the template is used after other templates on talk pages. It was added when the template was recently suggested for deletion (unsuccessfully) and afterwards not deleted. I have repaired most other affected templates and Jonesey95 has repaired several more, but this one still needs to be fixed.
