No redirect

It should be possible (and desirable) to change back to a redirect, now that the {{flag}} template has been enhanced. If this was a redirect, then any instance of {{flag|Taiwan}} would remain the same (including all instances where Template:TWN is used), and any instance of {{flagicon|Taiwan}} would render the same flag. The only template calls that would result in different output would be {{flagcountry|Taiwan}}. I will look for those specific instances and change to {{flag|Taiwan}}. Then we can change this back to a redirect, which I think is preferable for maintenance. Andrwsc 18:40, 6 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
There were 795 transclusions of this template, including 145 via {{TWN}}, but only 14 used {{flagcountry|Taiwan}}, so I updated them. Consequently, I will change this back to a redirect. Andrwsc 07:37, 7 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
[edit]

The links should now direct to Taiwan now that the article on the Republic of China has moved.--Tærkast (Discuss) 20:22, 21 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Template-protected edit request on 18 September 2016

[edit]

Please add the {{{age|}}} parameter to the football, basketball and rugby aliases (after the word "national"). Thanks, Maiō T. (talk) 22:17, 18 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Not done: This template is for displaying the correct flag for a country. Age is irrelevant. You'll need to provide a compelling reason, discussion and consensus for this change. Cabayi (talk) 06:14, 19 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Done. @Cabayi: It's to correct the link for youth sports teams templates such as {{fbu}}. SiBr4 (talk) 12:14, 19 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Template-protected edit request on 26 May 2017

[edit]

The link-alias-basketball creates wikilinks to the redirect page. It's something like a double redirect:
Code {{bk|TWN}} creates  Taiwan (article name: Chinese Taipei national basketball team) and then it's redirected to Chinese Taipei men's national basketball team.
So, we have two options: either we remove the link-alias-basketball line completely (result would be: Taiwan national basketball team, then redirect) or fix that line with {{{mw|men's}}} parameter. I don't know what's the better solution.
And then, please do the same edit at Template:Country data Republic of China, too. Thanks, Maiō T. (talk) 21:45, 26 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

After one week, I'm adding these examples

  • both link-alias & redirect:
{{bk|Taiwan}} Taiwan
  • redirect only:
{{bk|Taiwan/sandbox}} Taiwan
  • both link-alias & redirect:
{{bk|Republic of China}} Taiwan
  • link-alias only:
{{bk|Republic of China/sandbox}} Republic of China

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format.
As this hasn't been done in over a week I'll stick my neck out and suggest that the comment "I don't know what's the better solution" shows a lack of confidence in the change, a lack of testing, and a lack of consensus. Please reactivate when you've settled on what the requested change is. Cabayi (talk) 08:53, 4 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Note: Changes to Template:Country data Republic of China should be requested at Template talk:Country data Republic of China. It keeps the logic of the change together with the change itself and maintains clarity for those editors watching one of the templates but not both. Cabayi (talk) 09:02, 4 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Cabayi: After those years, I have decided. There's nothing to think about. The article name is "Chinese Taipei men's national basketball team" so please fix the "mw" parameter to {{{mw|men's}}}. Thanks, Maiō T. (talk) 21:09, 21 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

How is the Chines Taipei flag chosen?

[edit]

See Chinese_Taipei#Gallery_of_Chinese_Taipei_flags for a name of variants. I can't figure out from the code which of those we use, and I am not sure it is justified to use the 'white' variant instead of the regular flag of Taiwan (above)? I hope we are not using the Olympic flag by default - it would not be correct for other events with their own variants (like Paralympics). Is there a generic variant? And it's fine to use the white flag for the events that adopted it (like the Olympics), but what about other events that just adopt the name and are not clear about the flag? The "name" parameter of Template:Flag doesn't work properly

[edit]
Resolved

|name= doesn't seem to function as intended for Taiwan. For example. {{flag|Taiwan|name=Republic of China}} produces Republic of China. However, {{flag|Taiwan|name=Latveria}} does work, producing Latveria. Was suppressing "Republic of China" in the name parameter intentional? – Scyrme (talk/solidarity) 17:13, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Scyrme, Template:Flag delegates to a "country data" template corresponding to the first positional parameter. In this case, Template:Country data Taiwan, which has special logic for aliasing |name=Republic of China since Special:Diff/825421256 on 13 February 2018. Unfortunately, that edit did not include an edit summary about the purpose of the edit. I don't see any relevant discussion here nor at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Taiwan/Archive 7. —andrybak (talk) 21:39, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I see. Thanks for moving the discussion here. I noticed in the documentation here that there are suitable aliases that don't require |name=, such as Republic of China (Taiwan). A bit odd that China, Republic of works but "Republic of China" does not. – Scyrme (talk/solidarity) 08:47, 4 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I came here to open a discussion about this, then I saw it already happened thanks to @Scyrme . Taiwan participated in so many internetional competition as "Republic of China", it doesn't make sense to intentionally block this name. I mean everything else is possible (as mentioned above) except this one. why really? Sports2021 (talk) 22:37, 5 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
This could be related to a recent merger from Template:Country data Republic of China. I am also facing the same bug and unsure of its cause. Wasting time is still my passion (talk) 01:28, 9 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Fixed by adjusting the |name= parameter in this template. P.I. Ellsworth, ed.  welcome!  05:24, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
