Hi. The article Wolverton Town F.C. has been prodded as non-notable due to not satisfying the relevant guidelines. It is proposed that the bare essentials of that article be merged with this article, Wolverton A.F.C., as being an amateur club reformed from the now defunct subject of this article, and a redirect set, in order to show the link between the two. Done. This article already mentions the new club in arguably sufficient detail if it doesn't meet the notability guidelines, but if any more detail needs to be added it can be retrieved from the old article which has not been deleted but is now a redirect. --kingboyk (talk) 12:15, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

Why is it necessary to add a Wikipedia page in order to add a player to list?

In an edit note, user:81.99.178.220 asks for the reasons for the policy given at the top of the "Notable former players" section, which says that "notable" means:

1. Players that have played/managed in the Football League or any foreign equivalent to this level (i.e. fully professional league).
   
2. Players with full international caps.
   
3. Players that hold a club record or have captained the club.

The reason is that thousands of people have turned out for amateur, non-league and league clubs. We cannot list all these, we have no reasonable basis to choose between them and we don't even know whether the claim is true. So in this case and many others, Wikipedia applies a general principle called "notability". To qualify for inclusion, the person has to be be of some significance.

The tests given here are not the only ones: if there is a Wikipedia article about the player, that means that notability has already been demonstrated in some other way. So it is not necessary to create a Wikipedia page for the player, it just provides another way to qualify.

81.99.178.220 also asks how it is that a person can be listed at Northampton Town but not here? Probably because it hasn't been noticed. There are hundreds of thousands of Wikipedia articles and in each there may be special circumstances. Wikipedia has a policy, WP:other stuff exists, which states that just because it has been allowed or refused there does not mean that it must be allowed or refused here, unlike legal precedent in Common Law. Among the many things that WP:Wikipedia is not, it is not a court of law.

These are just general principles that could apply to any article about any subject. If a guidance is wanted (or even to challenge this commentary since I am just another volunteer), the question can be escalated to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football/England task force.

No John, you are making up your own rules here. If a player is on Wolverton’s records and on Northampton’s records then he has played in the football league. Creating silly criteria to exclude them is attempting to erase history. You should have more respect for those players. No, I am not making up the rules, nor did I write them. Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Notability#Player notability sets them out. You can see that Northampton have Adam Sandy listed in their players here 106 appearances, with "Wolverton Town" shown as the previous club. Its' plain to see that there is obstinacy at play here to the further detriment of Wikipedia. 82.2.89.219 (talk) 12:34, 14 April 2025 (UTC)

No such article so it makes is a bit difficult to see what you mean. But as a general principle, here's a big difference between giving a list of players v declaring a single player to be "notable".

Today I further discovered another ex Wolverton player, JC "Charlie" Morley who also played for Wolverton and signed for Northampton Town, in the 1930s.
