  3. Wang's research is focused on cellular mechanical activities including cell migration, cell division, and cellular sensing and generation of mechanical forces. In 1985, he discovered the propulsion mechanism for cell migration, powered by protein assembly at the front (https://doi.org/10.1083/jcb.101.2.597). In 1997, he introduced elastic polyacrylamide materials for the detection and manipulation of cellular mechanical forces (https://www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1073/pnas.94.25.13661), which then led to the development of traction force microscopy (https://www.cell.com/biophysj/fulltext/S0006-3495(99)77386-8) as a widely used tool for measuring forces exerted by cells. In 2000, his lab discovered the phenomenon of durotaxis, which causes cells to migrate toward stiff materials (https://www.cell.com/AJHG/fulltext/S0006-3495(00)76279-5).
