Architecture

[edit]

I have also seen the Venice Biennale mentioned in architecture circles, but I get the impression that this is a separate event (the other set of alternate years?). Can anyone clarify. -- Solipsist 21:50, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I don't know what the situation was in December 2004 but, here in 2022, it is in the lead. Thank you for your patience. Best wishes DBaK (talk) 22:02, 2 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

No mention of the 2018 Biennale, architecture, why? It was curated by Grafton Architecture of Dublin, Ireland, called 'Freespace', can you correct the page please? BW  Preceding unsigned comment added by 37.159.36.76 (talk) 10:46, 10 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Biennial?

[edit]

this term refers to something that occurs every other year, yet the article regers to it as occurring annually. Which is it? 2604:2D80:ED08:A00:D13:9B9A:EA7C:B9C7 (talk) 04:35, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, they were my initial thoughts exactly.
From a quick scan through the article, the dates seem to be approximately every two years, except when it isn't LOL. Covid caused a recent interruption (i.e. 2019 was followed by 2022), but even before that the timing was occasionally haphazard. However, the article does supply the following explanation;
Until 2019, the Art Biennale used to take place in odd years and the Architecture Biennale in even years, but after the COVID-19 pandemic forced a postponement, the Art Biennale now takes place in even years (2022, 2024) and the Architecture Biennale in odd years (2021, 2023).
So, it is an annual occurrence, but with a different focus that revolves on a biennial basis. I do agree that the introduction can be slightly confusing until you read the detail.
FYI the term Biennale has been somewhat corrupted more recently to include Documenta, which is held every five years, and Skulptur Projekte Münster, held every ten. In such cases it is less a statement of fact, and more of a sideways reference to the original Venice Biennale.
FWIW - up until ten minutes ago, I knew precisely nothing about all of the above; thanks Wikipedia for another load of trivia I shall carry to the grave.

"Venice Biennale" refers to several things: a) the Venice Biennale organization that organizes and hosts all Venice Biennale events, b) the original, international biannual art exhibition (formally the Venice Biennale Arte), and c) other Venice Biennale events, most of which rightly have their own name. In this case, you seem to be conflating the Venice Biennale Arte with the Venice Biennale Architettura, a separate Biennial. Both are hosted by the overarching Venice Biennale organization, but they are fundamentally different events; it's not a case of the event having a different focus every other year, the Art and Architecture Biennials are just completely separate events. The Venice Biennale organization also hosts the Venice Film Festival, an annual event, but again that is a completely separate event. This page could honestly probably be adjusted to reflect the fact that "Venice Biennale" can refer to a number of different discrete annual or Biennial events, all hosted by the overarching Venice Biennale organization. 19h00s (talk) 13:26, 6 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, and yes I am getting the impression that the article is trying to accomplish rather too much, and in doing so it is failing to distinguish between the separate elements.
As stated above, this is my first viewing of the whole subject, and I have just re-written the introduction merely to better cover the aspects as they were written before. Pulling it completely apart is not something I was particularly contemplating; maybe that is best left to somebody with more skin in the game?

Haha you read my mind -- this is a definite candidate for a split of some kind. I'd personally argue that the Art and Architecture events both deserve their own pages similar to the Venice Film Festival, with a separate page for the Venice Biennale organization itself which would also serve as the "history of..." for the overall org/event series. That separate page for the organization could also include the lesser-known recurring events (Dance, Theater, etc.), until such a time that they need to be split themselves. But based on the state of the page for the Music Biennale, the Dance and Theater iterations can probably stay embedded within the larger org page for now. I don't have the time to work on this right now right now, but I think it's a good idea for clarity. 19h00s (talk) 14:52, 6 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
