Did Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky compose his first orchestral work in a home in Trostianets? Did the Russian military destroy this house during its invasion of Ukraine in 2022? If yes to both, shouldn't these things be mentioned in this article? 173.88.246.138 (talk) 00:12, 7 April 2022 (UTC)

Hello @FromCzech, I just noticed that you moved this page from Trostianets to Trostyanets, stating that this is the "common name in English sources after 2022". I believe the page should be moved back to Trostianets, firstly because the Ukrainian national romanization system is conventionally used on Wikipedia (per WP:UAPLACE), and it's hard to say whether this city is notable enough for WP:COMMONNAME to apply. Though not necessarily representative, a Google search of "Trostianets" yields 808 thousand results, while "Trostyanets" yields 610 thousand. It is true that certain sources use the -ya- spelling (Russian or non-standard Ukrainian romanization), but I'm not convinced that it really is the most common name if WP:COMMONNAME applies at all. Hello @Shwabb1:, see this (If you want to verify the results for Trostianets, replace "y" with "i" in the search results):

• General google search (2022 and later, pages in English) shows 9,960 vs 6,110 results in favor of Trostyanets;
• Official website of the city uses Trostyanets;
• Other gov.uk pages uses predominantly Trostyanets (19,500 vs 2,050 results);
• New York Times predominantly uses Trostyanets (76 vs 6 results). BBC is only 4 vs 2. I haven't checked other media right now;
• With an exception of the period 2017–2020, ngram shows that Trostyanets is predominantly used, in 2022 it is used significantly more often;
• Ukrainian to Latin Converter shows "y", not "i".

The city has appeared in the media often enough in recent years to apply WP:COMMONNAME. FromCzech (talk) 17:07, 30 April 2026 (UTC)

It is unusual that the local government website prefers the non-standard spelling despite the existence of a national law that specifically uses the spelling Trostianets. On another note, I've never encountered the romanization system used by the "Ukrainian to Latin Converter" website (tz for ц is unusual while ʲ for ь seems to be taken from the International Phonetic Alphabet). This case reminds me of the proposed move of Sievierodonetsk to Severodonetsk as the latter is seemingly the more common spelling, but the discussion resulted in no consensus.
