Merge into Maratus griseus?

[edit]

I'm wondering if this article should be merged into Maratus griseus.

In 2019 Trite parvula (aka Euophrys parvula) was apparently renamed Hypoblemum griseum by Otto, Hill & Whyte.[1] This was done somewhat obtusely to my mind, but I'm not a biologist, and I find the paper hard to follow (read it for yourself). The key sentence was, "Żabka & Pollard (2002a) listed Euophrys parvula Bryant 1835 [1935] as a synonym, although they also placed this unrelated species in a different genus, Trite Simon 1885, in a separate paper (Żabka & Pollard 2002b)." They go on to say, "Forster & Forster (1972), followed by Jackson & Willey (1995), had mistakenly identified Hypoblemum griseum as Euophrys parvula." Seems like a comedy of errors, what with Z&P writing '1835' when they meant '1935'. Regardless, the name change was confirmed by arachnologist Fiona Cross in a popular science post later in 2019.[2]

Then in 2021 Otto & Hill moved Hypoblemum griseum to Maratus, it becoming Maratus griseus.[3]

However, the World Spider Catalog still lists T. parvula/E. parvula as an accepted species.[4] And, it has no mention of parvula under Maratus griseus.[5]

iNaturalist has no observations for Trite parvula but thousands of NZ observations for Maratus griseus.

Anyone able to figure this all out? Nurg (talk) 01:35, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

I'll take a look at this in a few days (a bit busy right now), but it has me interested. AxonsArachnida (talk) 05:38, 24 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I now think I was misled by the Cross article and thus misinterpreted Otto, Hill & Whyte. I think they were saying that parvula was unrelated to Hypoblemum griseum, and that Forster & Forster (1972), followed by Jackson & Willey (1995), had been looking at Hypoblemum griseum specimens and mistakenly thinking they were parvula. So I presume Cross was following the mistake of the Forsters, and Jackson & Willey. Perhaps Cross had not read Otto, Hill & Whyte, which was published only about 6 months earlier. So, scrap the idea of a merger. Cc User:AxonsArachnida. Nurg (talk) 11:24, 29 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Looks like you beat me to it. I contacted someone who is researcher Trite and they mentioned that there's a history of the two species being mixed up, even though they are clearly different. AxonsArachnida (talk) 01:52, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
