Hear it says that the Tambaqui is the only species in its genus, but the Red bellied pacu is marked as being in this genus also.--HighFlyingFish (talk) 00:18, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
Distinguishing Colossoma from Piaractus
[edit]The best way to distinguish Colossoma from Piaractus in my opinion is the operculum shape. Colossoma have large, very wide operculum. Piaractus on the other hand have thin, almost crescent shaped operculum. Note however that in very large Piaractus, the operculum gets proportionately wider, though still not as wide as in Colossoma. Both can have black bellies, but the olive green dorsal colouration is also only ever seen in Colossoma. The adipose fin of Colossoma has fin rays, while Piaractus is rayless and fleshy; high resolution photos are needed to see this however.
