Not a castle: a small hajj fort

Suggest renaming.

Qal'a doesn't automatically translate to castle, which has a rather narrow definition in English. This was a typical 16th-c. Ottoman hajj fort on the Syrian route, as there are many (see there). Castles are aristocratic residences or belong to military orders, tend to be larger than such forts, are mostly older (pre-gunpowder) and serve a more distinct military purpose, although such a fort also projected power, be it on a smaller scale.

I would suggert 'Tabuk Fort'. Other such forts on the Syrian route have enWiki articles called Qal'at ... or Khan ..., but an English name is more appropriate on English Wiki (just not 'castle', as this is not a castle). Arminden (talk) 17:31, 6 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
