The race of Kohner's character in Imitation of Life

[edit]

An edit was made recently that called into question the race of Kohner's character (Sarah Jane) in Imitation of Life.

The editor cited the IMDB, which is not a reliable source. It wrongly states that Sarah Jane is "mixed race." The film never refers to her as mixed racethe daughter of a white father and a black mother (Annie). Moreover, in the original source material, the novel by Fannie Hurst, the black mother figure (named Delilah in that version) refers to her daughter (Peola) as "colored" and her father as being "her light-colored pap". See Hurst, Fannie (1959). Imitation of Life. New York: Permabooks. p. 183. --Jeremy Butler (talk) 23:23, 10 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
