Brulé musical group

Brulé is a group that created traditional Lakota music, arranged in "techno" style or other modern styles. They attempted to raise awareness of the Lakota heritage. Brulé → Sicangu – Move to more commonly used name in English. Brulé is a very outdated French term. The Rosebud Sioux Lake overwhelmingly uses the term Sicangu when describing themselves. Alternatives exist with different orthography, but this is an English-language encyclopedia, so the most common term with no diacriticals is best, clearest, and not offensive or obsolete.   Sure. I add "Lakota" since Brulé understandably generated many French-language results. Google Scholar, "Sicangu"+Lakota yields 1,710 results. Meanwhile, "Brulé"+Lakota yields 789 results. You'll find many of the Brulé results skew older. Yuchitown (talk) 23:20, 14 June 2024 (UTC)

  Certainly, it's not that "Brulé" is never used, but "Sicangu" is preferred, particularly by the people themselves. In Google Scholar, Sicangu appears 217% more than Brulé. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe, who are Sicangu, refer to themselves as "the Sicangu Oyate people". Brulé appears once on their website in reference to Spotted Tail; Sicangu appears dozens of times. Sicangu → Brulé (tribe) – I propose moving this article to Brulé (tribe) and redirecting Brulé to the disambiguation page at Brule. Although Sicangu is now the preferred autonym used by the Lakota communities, Brulé remains the historically established and most widely recognized name in historiography, classical anthropology, and international reference works. Comment. No opinion on the move, except that the target under discussion should be Brulé without disambiguator, which currently redirects to Sicangu (per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC). Jähmefyysikko (talk) 16:01, 7 July 2026 (UTC)

Oppose - Unnecessary. Sicangu gets roughly as many hits on google scholar as Brule does meanwhile most of the Sicangu hits are recent works while Brule seems to be an archaic variant. GastonN'estPasBon (talk) 17:03, 7 July 2026 (UTC)

• Strong oppose, there's no reason to move from a Lakota term in current use to an outdated French term. Sicangu is also preferable as per WP:CONCISE. No evidence that readers would be more familiar with the French term than the current Lakota term. Additionally, the Sicangu are not a tribe. Yuchitown (talk) 22:41, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
