main claims section?
[edit]1. Symbolic thought not exclusive to humans: from numerical competence.
1a. Numerical Competence: chimpanzees could learn to
- resolve quantity-based tasks
- use Arabic numerals to represent quantities
- solve basic mathematical problems using basic concepts.
- perform symbolic matching ,
1b. Self control
- inhibiting initial impulses for better outcome
2. Cognitive evolutionary continuity - Leading primitive stages for complex cognitive traits and capabilities. Studies with dogs, pigs, Capuchin monkeys
- Social learning
- Tool use
- Quantitative reasoning
Countering the claims
[edit]Daniel Povinelli in Folk Physics of Apes, claims the animals are just relying on behavioral rules, not "understanding" the underlying "cause and effect". i.e. pressing 3 just means symbol with no meaning is associated a pattern which gives a reword. Thinking that the animal "understands" is a mistake.
Edward Thorndike in Law of Effect, claims that all learning, including animal and human learning is trial-and-error and reinforcement associative training, rather than insight or reasoning. Thus the question of reasoning and insight is not to be discussed.
John W Davis and S.R Memmot set narrow and strict definitions of language and counting intentionally excluding non-human performance. They claim the lab experiments are anthropomorphism, imposing non natural concerns and tasks which the animals do not possess, and then forcing onto them unfit terms.
