The English term pilot comes from the two Dutch words pijl (pole) and lood (lead).
[edit]This is wrong. The Dutch word for the instrument to measure death is nl:peillood, not pijl lood. Pijl means arrow, not pole. nl:Peil is the Dutch term for water level surface elevation, what in english, we'd call stage. The source of this (per the encyclopedia Britannica's entry on Pilot, 11th edition) may be Hexham, in Copious English and Nether-duytch Dictionarie who translates pijloot to Pilot https://books.google.ca/books?id=o5PK3TUqKP0C&pg=PP392&lpg=PP392&dq=Copious+English+and+Nether-duytch+Dictionarie+%22pijloot%22&source=bl&ots=N3O0h0FHdF&sig=ACfU3U1aHZ7nY_5js_oyGrXN0RWp1ACEyA&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjTkOzaqtfrAhUwknIEHeoBBbQQ6AEwAHoECAEQAQ#v=onepage&q=Copious%20English%20and%20Nether-duytch%20Dictionarie%20%22pijloot%22&f=false Vexations (talk) 16:00, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
Proposed merge of Sandy Hook Pilots Association into Sandy Hook Pilots
[edit]I have a conflict of interest because I am affiliated with the Sandy Hook Pilots, so I am seeking consensus rather than making this change directly.
There are currently two substantially overlapping articles:
Sandy Hook Pilots Sandy Hook Pilots Association
I propose merging any useful, reliably sourced material from Sandy Hook Pilots Association into this article and then converting the Association article to a redirect to Sandy Hook Pilots.
My reasons are:
The two articles cover substantially the same organization, pilotage service and history. The broader Sandy Hook Pilots article provides a more appropriate framework for explaining the historical pilot service, the separate New York and New Jersey associations, and current operations. Several items in the Association article appear inaccurate or outdated, including the employee count, annual sales figure, building identification, leadership information and stated founding location. I do not propose carrying those items into the surviving article without reliable sourcing. The historical photographs of pilot boats and pilot operations appear useful and could be retained in the surviving article where appropriate. Some unique historical material, particularly the 1895 reorganization and the transition from sailing pilot boats to steam vessels, may also be worth incorporating. Other isolated anecdotes could be evaluated individually.
I would appreciate comments from uninvolved editors on whether the two articles should be merged and, if so, what material from the Association article should be retained.
Thanks. ~2026-51800-97 (talk) 14:00, 25 September 2026 (UTC)
