That piece of unexplained commentary was added to the article in 2018 - I've now removed it. The official California Death Index gives his full name as Samuel F. Theard, as does this authoritative book and other sources like Findagrave (though it seems to spell his surname incorrectly). I don't know where "Samuel F. Theard" comes from.
