Fancy title

Hi,
I see old Tøfte has been given the title of "architect", which would have made him smile.
He was a farmer with no known formal education, but hired as "byggmester" ("master builder") for two churches.
However, there seems to be no word in English for this function, except "architect", with its connotations of Academe.
What would native speakers reccommend?
