The portrait is captioned as being of Robert Tatton "more than a decade before the siege of Wythenshawe Hall". As his birth year is given as 1606, he would have only been 27 years old in 1633 (the decade point before the start of the siege), but the portrayed man looks too old with his balding forehead and a visage reminding me of King James I in his last years(to 1625) ie a man more likely to be of Tatton's father's generation. How historically supported is the claim to the sitter being the subject of this article?Cloptonson (talk) 17:47, 18 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
I came here to say exactly this! I'm glad to see it has already been raised. It's impossible that this was Robert Tatton (born 1609). It's stylistically inaccurate. The top left notes that the 'sitter' (although he is standing...) is 56 years old. And also let's be honest, he looks at least that! This Robert (1609) was 56 in 1665, and stylistically there is no way that this painting dates to the 1660s. Or indeed anywhere even 20 years before that. Given that Robert was born in 1609 there's no way he could look this old dressed in this fashion; unless he went around dressed as a Jacobean in the reign of Charles II, which seems unlikely. Also, the painter, Cornelis Janssens van Ceulen left England in the mid 1640s (ie when Robert was 30s) and as far as I know did not return.
I would argue that this painting is of the Robert Tatton born c. 1565-6, who died in 1623. If he was 56 then that would make this painting 1621-2. This looks correct for the style and the fashion, and fits with the timeline of Robert (1565-6) and Cornelis Janssens van Ceulen. This Robert spent most of his life in Cheshire but late in life moved to London and died there. Me - again, apologies I meant birth 1606 rather than 1609. Which would make him 56 in 1661, and still impossible that the painting is him. I think elsewhere I’ve seen his birth year listed as 1609 hence my mistake. 92.40.214.228 (talk) 12:55, 14 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
