Despite the promise of an out-of-this-world trip, all that happened was 15 minutes in near space. I tend to agree, as it was in 1971 and he spent only one night in jail. I guess it's been put there for dramatic effect. It really is not a defining characteristic, with or without any source (that really should not be needed in the first sentence). I suggest it's removed. "in the drive back he realized that the records he was hauling were officially “exported.” He had papers to prove it. No one knew he hadn’t actually made it into France or Belgium. Who would stop him from selling the records in the UK without paying the purchase tax? He knew it was illegal, but in his words, he had “always got away with breaking rules before.” Besides, he was in serious debt. While Virgin Mail Order was becoming more popular every day, the prices were simply too low to make a profit. Virgin was £15,000 in debt and Branson had a £20,000 mortgage on a recording studio he had purchased. Not only could he make a profit with his truckload of records, it would only take a few more trips down to the Dover port to make enough money to pay off all of Virgin’s debt."

Shouldn't we add a mention of Branson's relationship with Jeffrey Epstein? This article has a photo of the two of them sitting and smiling together in an outdoor tropical setting.
Coming back to this after latest release of files, so far I've only gone through texts between Epstein and Steve Bannon, but Branson seems to be mentioned numerous times usually with the acronym "hbj" ~2026-71557-9 (talk) 04:52, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
