Linking a canon law is meaningless here. Wikipedia does not use its voice to speak for the Catholic church. Maddow can describe herself as a "practicing Catholic" if she wants. And unless someone has evidence that she has been excommunicated or denied entrance into a Catholic church, the information stays in the article. There are lots of notable people who have Wikipedia articles that describe them as Catholic even though they disagree openly with some of the Church's teachings, such as Joe Biden and Franciscan priest Richard Rohr. linking Canon Law is relevant in showing that there are actual criteria one must meet to be a practicing Catholic. Maddow is free to call herself a practicing Catholic, but the wording should be changed to say "she considers herself a practicing Catholic" instead of "she is a practicing Catholic" because she manifestly is not. I disagree. Unless someone can provide evidence that she has been excommunicated, she is considered to be a Catholic by the church's standards. Look at other articles of people who are Catholic. There is no requirement that it be stated "considers him/herself to be Catholic", despite the fact that these people have openly disagreed with the church. That's true for virtually every article that identifies a person as belonging to a certain religion. This article cannot be singled out. Again, the church speaks for itself; Wikipedia does not speak for the church. If she is treated the same as all other Catholics, we have no basis for removing the claim. We need evidence that the church does not consider her Catholic to remove the claim that she is Catholic. Otherwise that would result in hundreds (perhaps thousands) of articles being challenged.
