EMI house orchestra?
[edit]I question the description of the Philharmonia as EMI's "in-house orchestra". As Stephen J. Pettitt's history of the orchestra shows, Walter Legge was its sole proprietor, and though he shrewdly arranged his recording sessions so that EMI would pay for the rehearsals before his public concerts, EMI had no proprietary interest in the orchestra whatever. It is true that Legge's Philharmonia recorded exclusively for EMI but in those days so did Beecham's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - the former for the Columbia label and the latter for HMV - but neither could by any stretch of the imagination be called EMI house orchestras.
