Order of polls

Disagree. In my opinion this list falls under the specific exception in the guideline as there are frequent updates (the more so I doubt the order the other way around makes sense, since the most recent poll is the most relevant one given it is closest to the actual next election). SALORDER applies to stand-alone lists and timelines, and opinion polls do not exactly fall into either of these categories (even though the inclusion of events may cause some confusion in that regard). Opinion polls are also one of those specific cases where polls more recent to the actual election are more relevant than older ones. Impru20^talk 08:27, 25 February 2026 (UTC)

I came to WP:SALORDER from MOS:CHRONO, which implied to me that it also applies to non-stand-alone lists. But nevertheless, although it is not a stand-alone list yet, it will be (see Opinion polling for the 2025 Dutch general election). Dajasj (talk) 08:40, 25 February 2026 (UTC)

The examples put forward by both guidelines are not similar to opinion polling tables, which, as said, have their own mechanics and are not strictly "timelines" (though maybe events should be removed and brought somewhere else to prevent such conclusion from being reached). Reverse chronology is relevant to opinion polls precisely because polls more recent to the election are more relevant than older ones. Impru20^talk 09:00, 25 February 2026 (UTC)

The same can be said for most chronologies, because the most recent is generally the most relevant. And I honestly doubt they are more relevant actually, because the poll 1 day before the election is irrelevant the next day, because there is the more precise election result. Older polls are possibly more relevant, because they show a trend.

Anyway, I have asked on Wikipedia_talk:Stand-alone_lists#SALORDER_and_opinion_polls whether it should be included as explicit exception. That would also be a possible outcome Dajasj (talk) 09:11, 25 February 2026 (UTC)

The same can be said for most chronologies I would not say that for "most chronologies": opinion polls can be directly compared to an election result (and are frequently evaluated on their accuracy with regards to that result), which takes places at a specific point of time, whereas many chronologies and timelines may not even have a clearly defined end point (much less any data or figure up for comparison or evaluation).

In that regard, yes, the poll 1 day before the election is much more relevant than the poll 1 week or 1 month before the election, which are typically not taken into account for evaluation purposes.
