Distinctive lack of controversy
[edit]Where in the world is the controversy? Ms. Rachel is a very controversial figure, and this article minimizes that controversy. Just searching her name will drop controversy, which is missing from the article. Roc1233 (Talk | Edits) 18:22, 25 January 2026 (UTC)

Appropriateness of Category: American activists for Palestinian solidarity
[edit]There has been an extremely slow motion edit war back and forth going on the past year with regards to whether Category:American activists for Palestinian solidarity is an appropriate category for this article. I thought I remembered there being a discsusion on this previously, but looking back through the archive I was unable to find one. Rather than continuing a slow back and forth, as an uninvolved page watcher, I wanted to start a discussion to debate the merits of including or not including this category. If necessary, we could start an RFC, but for now let's hope we can find consensus through a discussion. Pings to involved: @Swatjester, @HadesTTW, @Useless Niamh, @Wisenerd. There are a few others who were involved who have since been blocked or topic-banned, who I have consciously not pinged here. 🌸wasianpower🌸 (talk • contribs) 15:29, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- It's not a slow motion edit war; it's a constant series of new editors who aren't familiar with our policies persistently adding a category for which there is no factual support either from reliable sources, nor support in the content of this article. Before even considering discussing an RFC, how about even a single person presents a single reliable source describing her as an activist for palestinian solidarity? Why is there a push to "discuss the merits" of something that nobody to date has yet even attempted to show evidence of? ⇒SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 15:31, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Swatjester: I've struck the language referencing "edit warring", I realized after I hit publish that that was too charged of a term for what is going on. My goal with starting this discussion is to try to understand why editors are continually adding this category to give the chance to present said evidence, rather than you having to continually revert this addition every other month or so. 🌸wasianpower🌸 (talk • contribs) 15:38, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- Hi, I apologize for not checking the previous edit history of this page before adding the category, that is my failing. I really fail to see the argument that Rachel is not a pro-Palestine activist; and the sourcing for her activism for Palestine is far more extensive than much of the other people in the category; who have at most just tweeted links in favor of Palestine or donated to fundraisers. (I am aware that this is more of an argument for the category to be removed en masse from pages with inadequate sourcing, but I conversely note that while I support this, I also believe Rachel should be considerd one still)
- Rachel is established in the article to have collaborated with the PCRF, reaffirmed in multiple interviews her support for the children of Gaza, refused to collaborate with anyone silent on the issue, has been attacked by media outlets and politicians for supporting Gaza, and created an exhibition dedicated to Gaza.
- Doing a search on news articles that use the word "activism" or "activist," in regards to her support of Palestine, I found these, noting that I have not checked if all of these are reliable but I believe some of them are:
- https://gcn.ie/youtuber-ms-rachels-social-activism/: "Here is where she frequently uses her platform to engage in social activism."
- https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2025-09-16/ms-rachel-balances-youtube-stardom-with-gaza-activism: Why the Queen of Toddler TV Became an Activist for Gaza
- https://www.city-journal.org/article/ms-rachel-griffin-accurso-palestine-childrens-relief-fund-israel-hamas: Her Instagram, followed by more than 4 million accounts, reads like the product of an anti-Israel activist who happens to wear bright colors and overalls. (note: openly pro-Israel source)
- https://www.jns.org/israel-news/ms-rachel-joins-forces-with-palestinian-journalist-genocide-survivor: But now, the internet is boiling, voices of boycott are strengthening and parents are required to ask themselves whether it is possible to separate the educator on the screen from the activist on Instagram.
- https://wisconsinmuslimjournal.org/https-www-newarab-com-opinion-when-glamour-meets-genocide-ms-rachels-get-out-guilt-awardutm_sourcefacebookutm_mediumcpcutm_campaignthenewarab-trafficcampaignutm_contenthttps-www-newar/: In the mind of the western establishment, Ms Rachel has catapulted from harmless children’s star to dangerous disruptor of the status quo and that’s precisely because her activism offers a blueprint for us all.
- https://www.middleeasteye.net/trending/ms-rachel-hailed-standing-right-side-history-after-glamour-women-year-nod: Ms Rachel’s activism on Gaza lauded in Glamour Women of the Year nod
- https://www.kveller.com/ms-rachel-features-hebrew-in-her-latest-episode/: Ms. Rachel has faced backlash for her activism and online statements since October 7, 2023.
- I note that this is deliberately excluding similar words such as "advocacy" or "advocate." The rest of these articles also establish that she is an activist for Gaza and Palestinians, and not merely just an activist for other unrelated causes.
To give a person the category simply for showing support for Gaza or saying "Free Palestine" is indeed a violation of Wikipedia's categorization requirements. It is not a violation to give the category for someone reliably described as a "pro-Palestinian activist," the exact four words in those order do not need to exist in a source for it to be given.
It is not original research or synthesis to translate a source that calls her an "activist for Gaza" to an "activist for Palestinian solidarity," they are near-synonymous terms and I find it hard to imagine that anyone would argue that you can be an activist for one of these but not the other. I'm curious as to the argument as to why the description doesn't apply to her conversely. HadesTTW (he/him • talk) 15:48, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- It is, in fact, original research and synthesis to do this. Those sources simply do not say she is an activist for Palestinian solidarity; they say completely different things and are not "near-synonymous" by any reasonable stretch. Not a single one of those sources supports the claim. "Social activism" is not "pro-Palestinian solidarity." "Activist for Gaza/Activism on Gaza" is referencing her anti-war activism; it makes no statement as to whether she believes in "Palestinian solidarity", whatever that's supposed to mean. "Anti-Israel-activist" is not the same thing as "pro-Palestinian solidarity"; one can be anti-Israel and still not be pro-Palestinian solidarity. "Activist on Instagram" does not state what she is an activist *for*. Neither does "Her activism" or just "activism." Not a single one of those quote you provided supports the claim. This is exactly my point -- there is no reliable source (I know, because I've checked periodically) that says she is an activist for Palestinian solidarity, because she literally has never advocated for Palestinian solidarity. She has advocated consistently for an end to the war in Gaza; she's advocated consistently for the rights of children; these things are undisputed and are in all instances what the above quotes are referring to. I will challenge you to find a quote from her calling for the creation of a Palestinian state? Or for the Palestinian people to "stand together" or using the phrase "Solidarity." You cannot simply transport her expressed beliefs in one thing by osmosis into creating non-existent beliefs in something else, just because you think they're similar. If you have to "translate a source" that says one thing into saying another, because it's "near-synonymous" (but in fact, isn't actually near-synonymous) that's a glaring red siren that this is WP:SYNTH.
Do not synthesize meaning from multiple sources to state or imply a conclusion not explicitly stated by any of those sources
. ⇒SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 16:05, 7 July 2026 (UTC)- I think you are using a very specific definition of "Palestinian solidarity" that excludes pretty much everyone from the category except for those that have those two words literally need to be next to each other in a source. This is extremely strict and excludes even politicians and activists who have focally supported Palestinian liberation and have been described as activists for Palestine, simply because no source thought to say that they are for "Palestinian solidarity" instead of, for example, "a supporter of Palestine" or having "Gazan solidarity." I did cursory searches for Zohran Mamdani and Noura Erakat and I couldn't find "Palestinian solidarity" in sources even though they are consistently described as activists who support Palestine.
- "Activist for Gaza/Activism on Gaza" is referencing her anti-war activism" - This is OR, how do you know that she only is concerned with the war and not also the well-being of the Palestinian people after the war is over? The PCRF, which she collaborates with, doesn't just help Gazans during the conflict but after the conflict as well. Do you think that a separate category called "Activists for Gaza" should be made?
- I also did not include the entire texts of the articles because I thought it would be unnecessary, in the first article it is said that Rachel uses her platform to "uplift the voices of those in Palestine, Sudan, and the Congo." I did not include sources that discuss her activism solely on opposition to ICE or on global warming.
- And lastly I actually did end up finding some sources that use "solidarity" with Rachel's name and Palestine.
- https://www.currentaffairs.org/news/greta-thunberg-and-ms.-rachel-offer-lessons-in-solidarity: They are nevertheless significant, and worthy of note, because they chose the path of solidarity. They are not Palestinian, and had nothing to gain from joining the Palestinian cause, but were moved to act out of sheer moral conviction.
- https://theintercept.com/2025/12/20/stopantisemitism-israel-blacklist-teacher-job-firings/: Known for targeting celebrities like Ms. Rachel, the pro-Israel blacklist also goes after private individuals who post in solidarity with Palestine.
- https://www.news24.com/life/arts-and-entertainment/celebrities/social-media-educator-ms-rachel-receives-first-nods-for-childrens-and-family-emmys-20251120-0899: "Accurso showed her solidarity with the Palestinian people". HadesTTW (he/him • talk) 16:27, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- Lastly I also want to note that I am open to removing the category from many pages that have failed to establish the subject as Palestinian solidarity activists, I just would find it absurd if The Intercept (listed as reliable, but biased on WP:RSP) that she has shown "solidarity with Palestine" doesn't count. HadesTTW (he/him • talk) 16:31, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- Yes, our policies quite literally state that a claim must be *directly supported* by the given source. If it does not explicitly say this, and if you have to change the substantive meaning of the words like you have in every single example provided, the source does not support the claim, and per our policies both on verifiability, reliable sourcing, and on BLPs, we simply cannot include that claim. Once again, none of the sources you've provided actually support the category without disallowed WP:SYNTH. The Current Affairs source saying she "chose the path of solidarity" does not state that her *activism* is pro-Palestinian solidarity in nature. It is once again, talking about her opposition to the Gaza war. The Intercept source is making two separate statements; it's saying that Stop Antisemitism is "known for targeting celebrities like Ms. Rachel", and then separately says "they *also* go after private individuals who post in solidarity with Palestine." Ignoring for a second that "posting in solidarity with Palestine" is an extremely weak and insufficient way to categorize someone as being an activist, The Intercept very clearly distinguishes those two halves of the sentence as being unrelated -- they say Stop Antisemitism targets celebrities, and ALSO goes after people who post in solidarity. Neither one of those statements, either independently or combined together, supports the claim that Ms. Rachel is an activist for Palestinian-solidarity. The News24 source, if you look at the rest of the paragraph, is very clearly referring to her advocacy for Gaza's children. Here's the full paragraph:
Accurso has been very outspoken about the current situation in Gaza. At Glamour’s 2025 Women of the Year Awards, Accurso showed her solidarity with the Palestinian people and honoured the children of Gaza with her outfit. Her clothes featured art from children in Gaza, who were asked to draw images, according to Harper’s Bazaar. She also invited a three-year-old girl from Gaza, named Rahaf, onto her show, who lost both of her legs in an Israeli strike. She has also used her social media platform to directly address these issues and make appeals for aid.
. Every mention in that article -- including all the quotes by Ms. Rachel herself -- are all in the context of her advocacy for both Israeli and Palestinian children in particular; and the outlet itself identifies her as a "social media educator", not an activist for Palestinian-solidarity. These are all really quite cut-and-dry examples -- if you have to stretch this much, because you cannot find a source that actually directly supports the claim you're trying to make, then the content is clearly inappropriate. Suggesting the problem is somehow with my "definition", rather than with your unwillingness to stick to what the sources say, is unhelpful. If there are other people who have also inappropriately been given this category, they should probably have it removed; but that's not the subject of this dispute nor this article. ⇒SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 16:43, 7 July 2026 (UTC)- For a useful comparison, here are people who ARE described by their sources as "activists for Palestinian solidarity"-- Jacob Bender --
Prof. Khalidi will be interviewed by Jacob Bender, Executive Director of CAIR-Philadelphia, a longtime American Jewish activist for Palestinian solidarity,
Neta Golan --There’s also Neta Golan, a trilingual Israeli-Jewish Ramallah-based activist for Palestinian solidarity, and Eitan Bronstein, director of Zochrot, an Israeli NGO that seeks to raise awareness of the Nakba.
Dror Felier --An activist for Palestinian solidarity, Dror is Israeli born, but barred from visiting Israel, is a member of parliament in Sweden, and a leading campaigner and coordinator of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition to Gaza.
. Clearly when it's applicable, sources are willing to do it. ⇒SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 16:57, 7 July 2026 (UTC)- Those are literally only three of four times in the entire internet those four words have been next to each other outside of Wikipedia. I just searched "activist for Palestinian solidarity" up and they all appeared. HadesTTW (he/him • talk) 17:04, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- For a useful comparison, here are people who ARE described by their sources as "activists for Palestinian solidarity"-- Jacob Bender --
- I don't know how to argue against the implication that the News24 source that says that Rachel "showed her solidarity with the Palestinian people" doesn't mean she promotes Palestinian solidarity; because she shows her solidarity with both the children of Palestine and Israel. Does that mean you need to specifically show solidarity with Palestinian adults, and also not show solidarity with Israelis as well?
- I'm going to recuse myself from this conversation, I would like a third opinion if I'm really stretching these sources. I feel as if the goalposts are being changed and made more difficult to be achieved. HadesTTW (he/him • talk) 17:00, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- Saying she wore a dress that showed solidarity does not mean that she is an activist *for* solidarity. These sources just aren't very good. For instance, your Current Affairs source even disputes this framing:
The popular children’s educator and YouTube star Ms. Rachel has taken a similar position. She, too, built a public profile in an area entirely unrelated to Palestine. But she has become an outspoken advocate for the children of Gaza, featuring many of them on her show and refusing to work with anyone who has not condemned Israel’s destruction of Gaza.
-- so they're willing to call her an "advocate" only for "children of Gaza" but similarly deny her as a general-purpose Palestinian advocate:Ms. Rachel does not appear to have much of a political identity beyond loving all children, but to sincerely love all children means opposing war, and opposing war means taking on some of the most powerful governments in the world.
This is what I mean -- it looks like you're trying to force through an unsupported POV using disallowed WP:SYNTH. If the sourcing actually supported your position, there'd be no problem finding copious sources that describe her this way. ⇒SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 17:08, 7 July 2026 (UTC)- It seems that part of the disconnect here is that editors read this article and are surprised not to see any category referencing her advocacy for Palestine and Gaza, and the only category we have for such people references "Palestinian solidarity", which is a fairly narrow topic to advocate for. Could a mutually agreeable solution here be the creation of a more applicable category, which could also be applied to others, maybe something like Category:Activists against the Gaza Genocide? 🌸wasianpower🌸 (talk • contribs) 19:38, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- She's already effectively in two appropriate mid-level categories: American anti-war activists; and American children's rights activists. The existing sub-category schema within that doesn't have one yet for Gaza, but broadly speaking the format is "American anti-NAMEOFWAR activists" using the pattern from WWI, WWII, Vietnam and Iraq. If someone wants to make *that* category and apply it here, sure, that'd be accurate. But I'd support "Gaza War", not "Genocide" in this context as the subcategory is about anti-war activism, and that's following the format of our other categories. So, "American anti-Gaza War activists", which then fits neatly as a subcategory with what we've already have. ⇒SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 20:40, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- That makes sense. I've gone ahead and created that category and a corresponding parent category, I've started working to add this category to articles but any assistance would be appreciated. I have to go tend to IRL things but I've added it to four articles to start to avoid potential issues with having categories with a single item in them. 🌸wasianpower🌸 (talk • contribs) 22:16, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
