Confirming the status of Benderskaya’s adaptation

A restoration of the 1927 Mariya Benderskaya’s stop-motion adaptation has been digitized and released on YouTube last month. Unfortunately, beyond YouTuber’s own words, I couldn’t locate any authoritative information. Neither on the authenticity of the video itself nor on its legal status. The latter would be particularly important: if it really has been released into the public domain, it could be added to Wikimedia Commons and linked here. it is not "YouTube own words". It is the words of Lost Media Wiki, who uploaded the video, and the commentary about the restoration on the initiative of Lost Media Wiki is WP:RS. It appears the film itself is in public domain in Russia. I dont know the rules about the legal status of the digital restoration. Here is publication of Lost Media Wiki. It says "On January 28, 2026, the cartoon was obtained from the archives of the Russian Federation's Gosfilmofond by Oleznik Omeznik, a member of the Lost Media Wiki server. Publication of the cartoon was permitted under the condition that attribution be given, as it had entered the public domain." You may contact [Lost Media Wiki and/or Gosfilmofond for clarification. Also, here is a Russian newsblurb. Since the upload was only one week ago, major Russian newsmedia are still asleep. Thanks for the reply. Note I wrote “YouTuber’s own words”. The words of the uploader. The action of whom I greatly appreciate and personally I believe everything is fine. But for Wikipedia we can’t just use random YouTube user’s words. And using Lost Media Wiki seem to fall under WP:UGC. Since fishki.net is already used as a source on English Wikipedia and the last paragraph mentions the event, I’m going to tentatively use it. Once more, thanks!

The copyright part is relevant, because we’re walking on the intellectual property minefield. A good-faith upload to Wikimedia Commons will end with little more than removal, if the uploader was not authorized to do so. But we’re also morally responsible for consequences to people who use the media in a belief it is the public domain. Many moving parts are involved too. A restoration may be considered a derivative work, so it’s unclear what Gosfilmofond released into public domain. A word of a Youtuber is hardly enough, no matter how honest. And that statement is already contradictory: it entered public domain, but attribution is required.

Don’t get me wrong: my goal is to make this available on Wikimedia Commons, not to fight against it. It would be an amazing addition. -- wikimpan (Talk) 16:26, 7 February 2026 (UTC)

IMO Lost Media Wiki is a RS, it says: "Lost Media Wiki is the largest and official wiki on lost media in the CIS, with hundreds of pages and thousands of contributors from around the world. We search for, publish, and share data on lost media of social value." Since it reports their own activities, not some fantasies, IMO it falls under WP:SELFSOURCE. --Altenmann >talk 21:55, 7 February 2026 (UTC)

In principle I don’t oppose inclusion of the LMW link among sources. Exactly because I do understand they’re going to be the best available documentation on their own activity in that matter. I left it there while editing the article, after all. But I believe 3rd party sources are required too.

WP:SELFSOURCE is not in opposition to WP:UGC. They’re two separate perspectives. The information on the linked page isn’t official, authoritative information from LWM. It’s an edit by a random user named Cfmot_Lol, who joined that wiki 1.5 years ago. It’s no different than me or you being cited as sources about Wikipedia.

I find that relevant both to prove authenticity of the video and to possibly be able to share it on Commons. I want to be absolutely clear that I do not myself doubt honesty of either person involved. My personal feelings are, however, of little importance. -- wikimpan (Talk) 01:04, 8 February 2026 (UTC)
