Major update to article

[edit]

I recently completed a substantial update to the Montebrier article to improve historical accuracy and incorporate reliable sources. The revision includes:

  • Expanded construction history based on the National Register of Historic Places nomination form (1972), which documents that construction began in the early 1850s and was completed after the Civil War.
  • Corrected ownership chronology, including the Mahan family, the Gorgas family, the Huckeby/McCalley period, the 1920s country club era, the bank foreclosure, and the 1932 purchase by John Steelman.
  • Updated architectural description to reflect both the NRHP characterization (“simple, early domestic Gothic”) and Robert S. Gamble’s classification of the house as part of the cottage orné tradition.
  • Updated infobox (builder, architectural style, completion date).
  • Added external links to the official Montebrier website, the historical marker, and the NRHP nomination form.
  • Cleaned up categories to reflect the corrected architectural period.

I forgot to include an edit summary when publishing the update, so I am noting the changes here for transparency. All additions are supported by citations to the NRHP nomination form, the 2004 historical marker, and Gamble’s *Historic Architecture in Alabama*.
