Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on November 8, 2025.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that Filipino politician Miriam Defensor Santiago is known as the "Iron Lady of Asia"?
Current status: Good article

Unclear sentences - Corrected

[edit]

I made some grammatical changes to appropriately point the pronoun she to the subject Miriam.

Miriam lost the favor of Mrs. Aquino's endorsement to Fidel Ramos; however she was consistently gaining public support for her candidacy for president.

Also I added some facts about the 2nd quoted text. This is in relation to the first ever impeachment trial against a Philippine president that happened in November 2000 to January 2001.

During the impeachment trial of then President Joseph Joseph Estrada, Miriam showed her stance in the proceedings by voting against the opening of a bank envelope containing evidence that will indict the former president. On January 13, 2001, she, along with 10 other senators voted against the opening of this envelope. The incident consequently ended the impeachment trial and led to the second EDSA People Power Revolution which removed Joseph Estrada as president.

Right off the bat, Earwig gave me a 67% chance there was a copyvio in the article. After looking, I saw that the most likely source was this from Rappler but the biggest quote is attributed. I believe it could be paraphrased; is there a need to include the entire quote in there? I would strongly recommend this and some of the other quotes be paraphrased unless there's a need to include the entire thing.

  • I assume I have fixed this issue.
  • Looks like Earwig picked up a WP:BACKWARDSCOPY when I looked - it's now up to 90.2%.
  • In copyvio compare, I compared an oldid of the page before the blog post was made and the blog post itself. I believe the website copied the article, but I am unsure. If this is true, do I follow the instructions in WP:BACKWARDSCOPY?

Prose part 1

[edit]

Early career

[edit]
  • Lead looks fine, and it covers what I would have expected for an article on a politician. However, I'd consider adding a little bit about her death at the end of the last paragraph.
  • Why at the end? Shouldn't it be at the part where the death is?
  • I suppose I'd just want a sentence or two about her death in the lead summarizing it. Not a huge thing for me though.
  • She died from complications from her cancer on September 29, 2016, and was buried days later at Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina. In the lead.
  • There, she was champion in numerous oratorical contests and debates and topped written examinations. This sentence is worded weirdly, I'd suggest rewording.
  •  Done
  • Her inspiration to become a lawyer and legislator growing up was Arturo Tolentino. Is this important? I'm 50/50 on that. How did Tolentino inspire her to become a lawyer? Did she ever say anything about this, and if so, what?
  • Added.
  • Defensor Santiago served as a special assistant at the Department of Justice before the Martial law under Ferdinand Marcos. Special assistant to whom? Additionally, "before the Martial law" sounds a bit weird to me. Is this generally supposed to be capitalized?
  • She also served as a special assistant at the Department of Justice during the pre-martial law years the source says. Fixed the other issue.
  • In the position, she served as one of the speechwriters for President Ferdinand Marcos. Rewrite to something like "She served as one of Marcos' speechwriters." The reason being that the words "Ferdinand Marcos" are already mentioned in the last sentence so it would sound clunky to do that same thing in the next sentence.
  •  Done
  • She was assigned to the Conferences and Treaties Section and became "skilled" at treaty negotiation and drafting. Does the source specifically use the word "skilled"?
  • I do not know, since another user added the source. Rephrased it just in case.
  • She was the youngest judge appointed to Metro Manila, exempt from the rule for newcomers to be appointed to provinces outside Metro Manila. Why was she exempt?
  • There is no information on this.
  • She also disposed of the highest number of cases in Metro Manila. "Disposed of" sounds a little awkward here. Optionally reword.
  • This caused Marcos issued a Preventive Detention Action order which authorized the military to hold suspects indefinitely without bail. Should be "This caused Marcos to issue an order which authorized the military to hold suspects indefinitely without bail." Grammar issues; also, you can include the words "Preventative Detention Order" with a wikilink optionally.
  •  Done
  • After martial law I would write this as "After martial law ended" and modify the rest of the sentence accordingly.
  •  Done
  • She extended to legal alien's protection This needs to be reworded for grammar. You may want to look at the other sentences in this paragraph for neutrality. However, I'm from the United States and (as you may have heard) we are currently having major issues with immigration so I may be biased.
  •  Done; I do not see any issue with neutrality.
  • Due to her former position as Immigration Commissioner, she gained numerous enemies which opposed her nomination. This is expected of politicians - unless something significant came from this, I'd consider removing this sentence.
  •  Done

1992 presidential campaign and time as senator

[edit]
  • Due to lack of funding should be changed to "due to a lack of funding" for grammar.
  •  Done
  • During her campaigns and rallies, her crowd was large. This sentence is awkwardly written, please reword.
  • Reworded, but there might be issues with neutrality.
  • While campaigning on April 28, 1991, she was injured in car crash should be changed to "she was injured in a car crash" for grammar.
  •  Done
  • She was stationed at the V. Luna General Hospital with, according to Cynthia Balana of Philippine Daily Inquirer, a face with the colors black and blue bearing numerous stitches. This sentence needs to be rewritten entirely. Something like "According to Cynthia Balana of Philippine Daily Inquirer, she was stationed at the V. Luna General Hospital." Without seeing what her face looks like I don't know how I would describe it, but "face with the colors black and blue" seems very off.
  • I assume I have fixed this issue.
  • During the first televised presidential debates in the election, she won the award of "Best Debater". How is this important?
  • Removed
  • Public outrage over the presidential results prompted Newsweek to feature her and her rival on the cover with the question: "Was the Election Fair?" This is not cited.
  • It is cited over here; added.
  • She ran in the 1998 Philippine presidential election and did not field senatorial candidates. What does this mean? I am unfamiliar with the Philippine legislative system.
  • She did not field candidates in the Senate. In America, this means creating a team of candidates which is in your party (Donald Trump has his Senatorial candidates, etc., but this might be a bit different).
  • In 2000, she filed in the Senate the first version of the anti-discrimination bill which would later become the SOGIE Equality Bill. She was one of the few senators who were against the opening of the brown envelope during the impeachment trial of then-President Joseph Estrada, who was her foe in the 1998 presidential elections. What is this brown envelope?
  • Added information.
  • Estrada was ousted in the Second EDSA Revolution Is the S in "second" supposed to be capital?
  • Yes, it is supposed to be capital.
  • I doubt the Summer sa Senado paragraph is very important, and would recommend deleting it.
  • Removed
  • Defensor Santiago ran for senator in 2004 and was elected as an official candidate of her party, the People's Reform Party. This may need to be reworded to read "was elected as part of the People's Reform Party" or something similar.
  •  Done
  • What is the Archipelagic Baselines Act of 2009? What effect did it have? What was its intent, and is it an important part of her career?
  • There is no information on this; deleted.

Prose part 2

[edit]
  • after her cancer was deemed 'stable' and 'receded' by doctors from the United States. This is the first time her having cancer is brought up in the article. I see the lung cancer is discussed in the first section of the retirement and death section, please consider moving that up for flow.
  • Moved the cancer part.
  • In 1985, Defensor Santiago was awarded The Outstanding Young Men award by the Philippine Jaycees. After doing a bit of research, I'm pretty sure the A in award is supposed to be capitalized here.
  •  Done
  • She was then awarded The Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service award by the Philippine Lions the next day. Who are the Philippine Lions? Also, I'd double check the capitalization for the award name (same as the above).
  •  Done
  • She was included in the Philippine Judges' Hall of Fame in 2015 by the Philippine Judges Association[...]. Perhaps this is a difference in national varieties of English, but I think a better word to use here would be "inducted".
  •  Done
  • President Rodrigo Duterte, who was another 2016 presidential rival. The fact that Duterte was a rival of hers is already clear and doesn't need to be restated here.
  •  Done
  • just days before Defensor Santiago's first death anniversary on September 29 should be changed to "the first anniversary of her death on September 29".
  •  Done
  • Defensor Santiago is not in favor of federalism should be "was" because she is dead. Same with and supports maintaining laws against it; that should be "supported".
  •  Done
  • The rest of the political positions section looks good. Ordinarily I'd want a little more on the specifics (e.g. why she advocated against abortion, etc.) but I have no concerns about this because there's a separate article on the topic. My only other commentary is that the last sentence could be either removed or expanded upon, depending on how important the Climate Change Law and the Renewable Energies Law are.
  • Removed
  • Prose-wise, the writings section looks fine by me. Stupid is Forevermore is a red link, though I'm not sure if it's worth removing it or not.
  • Removed
  • Same with her personal life and religious views sections. Having read them, I'm satisfied that they contain everything I'd want to know about a politician.
  • There were a few links in the See Also section that were used in the article. Generally, you only want to include links to articles that are related to the subject but aren't linked to in the article. I've gone ahead and removed them for you with the exception of Youth Reform Movement.

Citations

[edit]
  • There is a citation error in source 128: "The named reference MDS2 was invoked but never defined." Please address.
  • Fixed

I'll do a source spot check tomorrow.

Spot check

[edit]
  • Source 8 checks out.
  • Sources 4 and 14 do not check out for the phrase "I eat death threats for breakfast."
  • They are actually there. Maybe you missed them.
  • Source 15 checks out.
  • Source 36 checks out, at least as far as the quote is concerned.
  • Sources 49 and 50 both check out.
  • Sources 58 and 59 both check out.
  • Sources 68 and 69 both check out.
  • Source 81 does not check out. Specifically, the quote is not stated on the page word-for-word as "pride and honor to all Ilonggos", instead it says "pride and honor to her hometown".
  •  Done
  • Source 86 checks out.
  • Sources 89 and 90 both do not check out for the claim that she is the sixth person and only woman to be nominated for the award.
  •  Done
  • I am not quite sure on source 103, as it doesn't mention the words "SOGIE" or "equality" directly.

Overall

[edit]

Overall this is not bad. Just a few things that need to be fixed with the sources. Normally I'd feel OK passing this but with an article of this length (combined with the fact that this is the first biographical article I've reviewed) I think I'd rather ask for a second opinion to make sure I didn't miss anything important.
