Independent
[edit]What is the purpose of the word "independent" in "Collingham College, an independent college in Kensington"? 81.155.219.200 (talk) 13:21, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
- The adjective tells us it is an independent organization, not part of a larger institution. Compare to other colleges which may be part of universities, governmental education systems or connected to religious organizations. - SummerPhDv2.0 16:06, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
- In fact, Mr SummerPhD, in this context it means that it is basically a fee-paying school, barely distinguishable to what is known in the UK as a 'public school'. I know, because I went to one on a scholarship. They get to make up their own curriculum and some rules separate from the state school system. So 'independent' here can safely be called 'posh' or 'exclusive' or 'fee-paying' school.86.87.191.180 (talk) 17:40, 23 October 2021 (UTC)
Nationality in the lead sentence
[edit]My edit has been reverted, but it's definitely valid cuz she established a career in the United Kingdom as a Briton, then emigrated to the United States and was naturalized and continued her career, and is thus known as both a British actress and as an American actress (see WP:ETHNICITY). Should the infobox caption include the specific month?
[edit]I think the previous one is fine. MOS:INFOBOXPURPOSE says, “Wherever possible, present information in short form, and exclude any unnecessary content.” Thedarkknightli (talk) 05:08, 8 October 2023 (UTC)
- I agree in this instance, and have reverted it (before seeing your note).Ponsonby100 (talk) 08:18, 8 October 2023 (UTC)
