What is "slated" supposed to mean in this sentence?

"Hashimoto Toru, the mayor of Osaka, slated [sic] the teachers as "It was good that criminals [teachers] who are intent on breaking the rules [of not singing the state anthem] have risen to the surface [public]"? The use of "slated" is colloquial, specific to British English, and it's vulgar; that's why I deleted the sentence. Wikipedia is not the place for colloquial British English. See https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/slated Autodidact1 (talk) 16:51, 20 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Need confirmation of translation

The second line, "千代に八千代に" should be more accurately translated as "For ever and ever" or "for eternity". Is it correct? Pichnat Thong (talk) 11:45, 3 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Completely correct, and just to reemphasize the point so we do not impose colloquial but inaccurate translations, 千代に八千代に literally means "For 1,000 years to 8,000 years" and that is the correct translation into English. Chandlerburr (talk) 22:52, 5 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

The Controversy section does not, currently, mention the real controversy

I just read this page for the first time. I was a jr high school English teacher in Nagano-ken for a year, and it is startling that the by far most important controversy surrounding Kimi Ga Yo is in the Controversy section. The anthem is controversial because it was used by the right wing pre- and during World War II and is a rallying cry used by the Japanese right wing since the War's end into the present. It is considered fascist, imperialist, militaristic, and a symbol of the Japanese government that colonized large portions of Asia and brought Japan into the War. Many Japanese on the left will not sing it, and singing it in Japanese schools generates a very strong, tense reaction of -depending on the politics of the individual teachers - shock, anger, and tension. Imagine the political and emotional complications from singing "Deutschland Deutschland uber alles" - the reaction is similar if not stronger. Can someone more educated on the top include this crucial part of Kimi Ga Yo's meaning in Japanese history and culture. (Merely bc it's funny although equally underlining the point, gay Japanese people who are left of center and want to be provocative might sing the song in another version, Kimi Gay Yo, as if the Emperor were gay.
