Note regarding possible listing as an AIDS denialist

Chin is not technically an AIDS denial-ist - he seems to admit that HIV is the cause of AIDS (page 6) but his work appears on multiple AIDS denial sites and if he issued an objection to his appearance in House of Numbers, I can't find it. I am sure he believes HIV causes AIDS, but he continues to provide ammunition to folks in the HIV/AIDS denialism movement.

I am skeptical of listing him as an AIDS denialist, I am sure he would vehemently disagree with this assessment. He also seems to be maintaining his own wikipedia page (Hello Dr Chin!) but that's not my main point.

Dr Chin seems to believe that things like the WHOs 1985 AIDS protocol lead to over estimations of people with HIV/AIDS. While the WHOs protocol was not perfect by any means, it seems to have have been fairly accurate for doing population level surveillance in countries where most labs didn't have electricity. All the critiques (1) (2) (3) (4) of the WHO protocol I can find were resolved with the 1993 and subsequent updates.

One of AIDS "truth" websites says:

"In September 2008, Dr. Chin stated:  “my major epidemiological differences with UNAIDS have been mostly resolved because now UNAIDS’ numbers and estimates of the pandemic’s trajectory are almost identical to mine” on a web site adjuvant to his trade book, The AIDS Pandemic: The Collision of Epidemiology With Political Correctness.".

I cannot find this post. Does anyone know where it might be?

However, Chin has continued to provide feedback to researchers (who are not doctors of medicine) which suggest he still believes the World Health Organization's estimates to be wrong. Several years ago his post Berkley academic work in International Journal of STD & AIDS (impact factor of 1.3) seems to suggest he strongly disapproves of wide-audience HIV prevention strategies in favor of abstinence-only sex education. I base this on a line from his blog post, "The Myth of a General AIDS Pandemic" where he wrote:

"In low prevalence countries, general HIV/AIDS education programs that focus on youth are not essential. As a card carrying United Methodist, I believe the avoidance of premarital and extramarital sex is as vital and needed in low HIV prevalence populations as it is in high prevalence populations. However, as an objective infectious disease epidemiologist, I believe the prohibition of all sinful sex in low prevalence populations is not needed to prevent epidemic sexual HIV transmission" (source)

This strategy has been largely ineffective at tackling AIDS in any nation. It also leads me to wonder about the quality of "counseling" Dr Chin offered gay men in 1988. UnifiedFunctionality (talk) 21:10, 15 April 2026 (UTC)

I have located Dr Chin's statement saying the agrees with UNAIDS. His website contained no acknowledgement about House of Numbers, but does contain a oddly specific "I believe HIV causes AIDS" notation in his bio. I also found a list of Op Eds source where he continues to blames AIDS on "gay sex networks" and female sex workers.

There's also this very interesting paragraph on his "Review" section: "Human rights, social justice, poverty, discrimination, gender inequity, and lack of access to health care are all important social and economic issues, but they are not the driving forces or major determinants of HIV epidemics. Effective HIV prevention requires dispelling these “glorious myths” and increasing research to improve the art and science of changing HIV-risk behaviors, especially sex networks!"
