Is there regular ferry service? The article mumbles about dredging. Is this something that was done once is it a repeating issue? What was the depth before dredging, what is the depth now? How important a shipping lane is this strait in either direction? Were there ever serious proposals for a bridge or tunnel? Does the strait freeze solid? If so, how often?
