4 Erbil

[edit]

Why is Erbil ranked fourth largest city when it has 1.5 million while the other two ranked second and third both have 1.3 millions? ~2026-36361-89 (talk) 15:09, 14 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Addition for the historical Western term of Iraq

[edit]

I recently added the Historical western term for Iraq in the article, I got the inspiration from other articles for Example : Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Eswatini and Iran as all of these articles include the former/Historical name for these nations I felt that if I included the historical term it would make the article more consistent and also provide useful information. @YousifMustafa881 This may be better for the Etymology section than the first sentence of the article. CMD (talk) 00:39, 26 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I had this idea, but then I read the etymology section of the article and it mostly explains how the name Iraq derives from Uruk through multiple Mesopotamian languages, not the etymology of Mesopotamia and I also noticed that in other Articles Wikipedia uses a some kind of traditional or standard way of mentioning the historical or former name of Nations so it seems up to standard written that way, but it is also a good idea of putting the etymology of Mesopotamia there as well, Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts. Etymology is about words, not places. Toponymy is about names of places. PamD 05:51, 26 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I removed this. Nobody refers Mesopotamia to Iraq (as a country). Mesopotamia is a historic region. Should we call Turkey, historically known as Anatolia? Most of those historic names examples isn't even comparable to this. Eg. Iran / Persia. Beshogur (talk) 11:23, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I provided sources, and the modern borders of Iraq were referred to Mesopotamia not Iraq for a specific period, I provided 4 sources please take a look at them, thank you YousifMustafa881 (talk) 19:30, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Being sourced doesn't mean inclusion. Yes the region was called Mesopotamia by the British, but it doesn't refer to the current country of Iraq. Then we should call Syria, historically known as Levant, etc. Beshogur (talk) 09:07, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
