There are severe, foundational flaws with the entire premise and structure of this article that violate core Wikipedia content policies.
Textbook Violation of WP:SYNTH and Anachronism: Modern Nation Pakistan was established in 1947. However, this article explicitly inserts the modern name 'Pakistan' over 200 times into a 5000 BC ancient timeline. Mainstream, peer-reviewed historical scholarship does not project 20th-century political entities retroactively onto the Neolithic or Bronze Age eras.
Violation of WP:NPOV and WP:FORK: Forcing a modern national identity onto 7,000 years of regional history is highly biased and constitutes a nationalistic content fork. The history of this geographic region during 5000 BC already belongs to the established historical pages of that era or territory (India).
Moving this page to the Draft namespace was done to allow a complete structural overhaul away from Mainspace, ensuring Wikipedia does not host historical misinformation. Reverting it back to Mainspace without addressing these 200+ structural references is disruptive editing.
Before making any further unilateral moves, please provide independent, peer-reviewed academic sources (not state-sponsored or personal opinions) that explicitly categorize 5000 BC history using the modern 1947 political framework of 'Pakistan'. Phooey! Most of these "Pakistan"s are in links, references etc, or geographical mentions that clearly say "in modern Pakistan" or similar. In addition, a large part of the article (rather too large perhaps) deals with the run-up to independence & the Pakistan Movement etc, where uses are right and inevitable. . Request for Title Change: "History of Pakistan" → "History of the Indus Valley Region"
Proposal:
The current title "History of Pakistan" is fundamentally flawed and violates core Wikipedia policies:
1. WP:ANACHRONISM – The sovereign state of Pakistan was established in 1947. No political, cultural, or geographical entity called "Pakistan" existed before this date. Using this name for 5000 BC history is a textbook anachronism.
2. WP:NPOV & WP:FORK – Forcing a modern national identity onto 7,000 years of regional history constitutes a nationalistic POV fork. The history of this region belongs to the broader "History of South Asia" or "History of the Indian subcontinent" until 1947.
3. WP:SYNTH – The article synthesizes ancient history with a modern political entity without any mainstream academic source that explicitly uses the name "Pakistan" for pre-1947 history.
Key Clarification: "Modern-day Pakistan" is also incorrect:
Some editors defend the current title by saying "modern-day Pakistan" is just a geographical clarification. This defense is invalid because:
- "Modern-day Pakistan" implies a continuous political/geographical entity from ancient times to today – which is historically false.
- A region's history does not "transfer" to a new nation just because borders change.
- The correct geographical reference should be: "located in the Indus Valley region" or "in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent".
Why "History of the Indus Valley Region" is the correct title:
- History belongs to a geographical region, not to a political entity that did not exist.
- The Indus Valley region has a continuous history from 5000 BC to the present day.
- In 1947, this region was divided – but the history did not "end" or "transfer" to Pakistan or India. It continued as the history of the region.
- This title is neutral, academic, and free from nationalistic bias.
Proposed Action:
1. The article should be moved to: "History of the Indus Valley Region" (or "History of the Northwestern Indian Subcontinent").
2. The lead section should clearly state:
"This article covers the history of the Indus Valley region from ancient times to the present day. In 1947, this region was partitioned to form the modern state of Pakistan, but the history of the region itself predates and transcends this political division."*
3. All references to "Pakistan" before 1947 must be replaced with neutral geographical terms.
Academic Evidence:
Mainstream, peer-reviewed historical scholarship does NOT categorize 5000 BC history using the 1947 political framework of 'Pakistan'. Examples:
- The Indus Valley Civilization is universally referred to as "Indus Valley" or "Harappan" in academic literature – never "Pakistani".
- The Mughal Empire, Delhi Sultanate, and British Raj are all studied as part of "Indian" or "South Asian" history – not "Pakistani" history.
Conclusion:
History does not belong to modern nation-states. It belongs to regions and peoples. The current title is a nationalistic distortion of historical facts. If this title change is not accepted, the article must be moved back to Draft space until a neutral, policy-compliant version is created.
Was this written with AI? It rather reads like it. This just isn't going to happen, any more than with History of France, History of Denmark, History of the United States and so on - or for that matter History of Yorkshire. Readers are naturally interested in the history of the country they live in, especially Pakistani readers with an intensely nationalistic education system. Are there specific uses of "Pakistan" that you think should be changed? As I said, I read through most of the article without seeing any (slightly to my surprise). The article begins "The history of Pakistan preceding the country's independence in 1947[1] is shared with that of Afghanistan, India, and Iran. Spanning the western expanse of the Indian subcontinent and the eastern borderlands of the Iranian plateau, the region of present-day Pakistan served both as the fertile ground of a major civilization and as the gateway of South Asia to Central Asia and the Near East." which seems clear enough to me. Not all of modern Pakistan can really be called "the Indus Valley Region", and (btw) "Indian Subcontinent" is now deprecated. Also we don't have an article on the Indus Valley Region - this redirects to Indus Basin, which includes most but not all of Pakistan, a lot of Afghanistan, some of India, & a little of China. 1. "Was this written with AI?" -- This is an ad hominem attack. My writing style is irrelevant. Please address the content and policy violations, not the contributor.
2. "This just isn't going to happen, any more than with History of France, History of Denmark..." -- This is a false equivalence. France and Denmark have existed as political entities for centuries. Pakistan did not exist before 1947. A better comparison would be "History of the region that became Pakistan" -- which is exactly what I am proposing.
3. "Readers are naturally interested in the history of the country they live in, especially Pakistani readers with an intensely nationalistic education system." -- This is exactly the problem. Wikipedia is not a tool to reinforce nationalistic education systems. WP:NPOV requires us to write neutral, academic history -- not cater to nationalist biases. If Pakistani readers want nationalistic history, they can read state-sponsored textbooks. Wikipedia must remain neutral.
4. "The article begins with a clear disclaimer..." -- The disclaimer is good, but it contradicts the title. If the history is "shared" and "precedes 1947", then the title should reflect that. The title "History of Pakistan" implies that this history belongs to Pakistan -- which is false. History does not "belong" to modern nation-states.
5. "Not all of modern Pakistan can really be called 'the Indus Valley Region'" -- You are correct. That is why I also proposed "History of the Northwestern Indian Subcontinent" or "History of the region comprising modern Pakistan". However, "Pakistan" remains anachronistic.
6. "'Indian Subcontinent' is now deprecated" -- This is incorrect. "Indian Subcontinent" remains the standard geographical term in academic literature (e.g., UNESCO, Oxford, Cambridge). Even if it were deprecated, "South Asia" is a neutral alternative.
Conclusion:
I am not asking for the article to be deleted. I am asking for a neutral title that reflects the fact that this history predates 1947. The current title is a nationalistic POV fork. If the title cannot be changed, then at minimum:
- The lead must explicitly state that this is the history of a region, not a nation.
- All instances of "Pakistan" before 1947 must be replaced with neutral geographical terms.
If these changes are not made, I will escalate this to WP:NPOVN (Neutrality Noticeboard) and WP:RM (Requested Moves)
