This object is, in normal context, just referred to as a fan. I would only call it a hand fan if there was some particular reason to distinguish from an electric fan; just as here in the U.S., I would not say American Civil War or American football unless I needed to make a distinction. (I assume but do not know that this meaning "fan" is the original one, since sports fan is a shortening of a longer word and probably less than a few hundred years old, and electric fans obviously are less than 200 years old, whereas hand fans go back much further in time -- and the word probably does too. Maybe someone with access to the OED could confirm this.)136.36.176.51 (talk) 18:35, 8 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

We need to add more constructive material in this section, LGBTQ+ dose not need to be included her because we are talking about hand fans not LGBTQ+, a more constructive article might include that dollar tree for example sells paper/plastic hand fans we can also talk about how they are still used in forms such as electric hand fans, for example hand held fans such as this and there are also neckless fans such as this , i can go document hand fans sold in store such as dollar tree and walmart/target and update this section. it feels a little creepy that we need to talk about such a sexualized topic as drag queens in a non sexualized topic such as hand fans.
