Humans with gills

The article claims, “Additionally, it is believed that hiccups originally come from an adaptation of amphibious humans so that the glottis would close forcing water out of the gills similar to a frogs croak or ribbit.” Amphibious humans? With gills? My first reaction is Who writes this Crap?! On second thought, could it be a myth told by the didgeridoo players? In any case it is not relevant to an article about producing speech; it might be relevant in the article on hiccups, which already discusses the evolution from amphibians. Human-centered

This article gives little information about the glottis as an anatomical structure, and focuses on its role in human speech, making no mention of the fact that many different kinds of animals have a glottis.NCBioTeacher (talk) 02:56, 30 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, a lot of articles are. Worse, if you try to make the article neutral by focusing first on the general meaning then moving into the human specific meaning, people have a habit of rolling back the changes so it just makes editing tiring. I've opened the article with "In humans" and extended the first paragraph to include:

> In the bichir, an early lunged fish, the glottis is a slit shaped opening into the oesophagus.[1] In many reptiles air can be passed across a partially closed glottis to produce a hissing sound.[2][3] In snakes the glottis is found behind the tongue but can be extended out the side of the mouth while eating large prey.[4]

Based on past edits I'm pessimistic that it will get rolled back so I'm putting a comment here so someone else can more easily pick up the work if it is.Porco-esphino (talk) 18:59, 16 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
