Gamma velorum as an optical double
[edit]According to given astrometry datas, γ1 Vel's movement does not align well with that of γ2 Vel. Its parallax also suggest γ1 is a background* object at least 68 light years further from us than γ2. Is it likely that γ2 is not bound to γ2 and only appears close by chance? - Maybe, but at the system's distance, parallax measurements are hardly precise, specially for a bright object behind another even brighter object. The radial velocities and proper motions are still comparable though. 21 Andromedae (talk) 13:31, 2 September 2025 (UTC)
- I've reworded the lead sentence, which previously defined this bluntly as a quadruple star system, something that is either debatable or just wrong. Within the approximate volume including the two naked-eye components there are several other stars and PMS objects which have at least as much claim to being part of the same system. These objects, including the bright pair, are all just-about-universally considered to form a sub-group within the Vela OB2 association, although probably not all gravitationally bound.
