Pl wiki has a reliable cite (which I cannot easily verify, however): "The similarity of the shape of the main hall to the descriptions of alien space vehicles from science fiction novels published in the 1960s, i.e. flying saucers, contributed to the popular name for the hall - "Spodek"" (lit. saucer).
