Ferrocerium lighter

[edit]
the lighter

In Flint#To ignite fire or gunpowder, there is an image of a A ferrocerium "flint" spark lighter in action. (The quotes are even in the figure caption.) I think that this figure should be moved somewhere else (such as discussion of tools replacing flint tools or possibly other article), or removed completely, because I think that the lighter has none of its parts made of flint. ❏ Okterakt 🦊 UwU (talk) 17:23, 23 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

I thought that the lighter used flint to generate a spark, in which case it would make total sense to me if it stays there. Cherrynoize (talk) 08:32, 4 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Outer layer of oxide?

[edit]

The text says that flint is silicon dioxide (SiO2) and then also "A thin, oxidised layer on the outside of the nodules is usually different in colour, typically white and rough in texture." As silicon dioxide is obviously already oxidised, how is it possible that there is an outer oxidised layer? Fig (talk) 15:30, 5 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Inconsistent regional spellings

[edit]

This article uses inconsistent American and British spellings. Should this article use American, British, or Canadian spellings? 2600 etc (talk) 14:41, 8 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

The very first version in 2002 was British English, with "colour" in what was then the first para, now para 2, where it remains. Since there has never been a discussion, per WP:ENGVAR this is what we should use. Johnbod (talk) 18:07, 8 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
