Commons?

We have commons:Category:Flags of Washington (state). Should there be a subcategory specifically for the flag of Washington, and not just one for flags of Washington? Would be nice to separate the official state flag from other flags associated with the state. ---Another Believer _(Talk) 15:04, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

Use of NAVA survey as source

I removed the reference to the NAVA survey, which has been added back twice. The problem with the NAVA survey is that it is neither a reliable primary nor secondary source. The survey is not a reliable primary source for the reasons I have explained: it was an unsampled, unverified poll. Period. NAVA's own material shows this. Opinion polls must have a representative sample to be in the universe of reliable evidence of public opinion. Any secondary material NAVA published that derives from the unverified primary material is unreliable as well. The reference violates Wikipedia's own policies.Georgepreble (talk) 02:05, 17 April 2018 (UTC)

@Georgepreble: Please bring this up at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology instead of debating on each individual flag's talk page. The NAVA survey has been referenced by enough reputable secondary source, especially in the context of Washington's flag, that it warrants a mention on the page. There's Another Proposed Flag

Aside from the proposed design submitted by Terrence A. Geiger to the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in 1976, another flag designed by Bradley James Lockhart is also being proposed to replace the current flag. I've seen some real life images of that proposed flag, including an image shown here, which is a proof that it existed. Anonymy365248 (talk) 15:57, 1 May 2025 (UTC)

Proposals that do not have widespread coverage in reliable secondary sources will not be included in this article. As far as I can tell, Lockhart's flag has not been covered by a major newspaper, news agency, or academic analysis. SounderBruce 16:00, 17 May 2025 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information, so the minimum requirement is coverage that is reliable, in-depth, and relevant. If we included every self-published proposal for a new state flag, this article would have too many examples to be useful. Only those that have been covered by secondary sources warrant a mention. Section ordering

@Femfem5: The new version does not seem to be an improvement over the original order of sections. There were far too many subsections and I feel that source–text integrity was at risk. Please abide by the Manual of Style, especially as it pertains to section length and lead citations. SounderBruce 04:15, 27 February 2026 (UTC)

1889 Flags and Banner

I found a source describing a banner bearing the coat of arms of George Washington (maybe family or face) during a session in the Territorial house on deciding the the state's new coat of arms. I also found text talking about the flags given to the 1st Washington Territorial Infantry Regiment in May of 1889. Their regimental flag is very interesting the flag was described as: "...The other is a territorial flag. It is of blue silk, with the coat of arms of the territory in the center. Over the coat of arms is painted "First Regiment N. G. W."..."

Maybe add them to an "unofficial-flags" text what do y'all think?

The first source tells us that there was a proposal to adopt the coat of arms of George Washington as the state coat of arms. Nothing to do with the flag.

The second source confirms that at least one regiment in the territory used banners with the territorial seal. This could be mentioned at the end of the first paragraph of the Background section where we have noted the use of regimental banners that were likely inspiration for the current flag. We could write that this was the continuation of a tradition that had been around since before statehood (and that had existed in the United States for much longer).
