Confusing Mess
[edit]This article is badly written and confusing. The lede defines the FUCA as existing before cells, but some paragraphs imply that the FUCA was a progenote and then defines progenotes as being cells. The article also repeatedly talks of "open" and "semi-open" systems and never explains what that means. I consider myself to have a decent lay understanding of origin of life theories and I can't make any sense out of this article. I still have no clue what a progenote, a FUCA, or an open system is, whether any of them had lipid cellular membranes, and what order they are supposed to have evolved in. I am also confused whether the FUCA is supposed to have been the first lifeform or to have evolved from something else, despite its name. 198.98.201.91 (talk) 23:57, 12 September 2024 (UTC)

This article is kind of good.
[edit]It is obviously, objectively, too dense with its terminology, and I don't wish to muddy the waters of a future conversation about how to functionally improve upon it... but with that said, I think there might be an argument to be made in its favor.
This is not an introductory level topic, and it makes sense to explain it using complex terms. For me, even not strictly understanding the terms as they were used, being able to just read them and think of them as new words (just because, that's what they are to me) brings much more of an understanding than reading without doing so. Obviously supplementing this by reading linked articles where relevant also helps. Obviously I trust the community to come to a more levelheaded conclusion, but a part of me is seriously concerned that we might be contributing to a crisis in engaged reading/literacy, rather than combatting it, by simplifying the language in this article.
Call me crazy, because I probably am, but I feel it is better at least to say this rather than leaving it unsaid. ~2026-16303-73 (talk) 06:20, 15 March 2026 (UTC)
- To avoid the "new word" effect, I think it requires the mental model of a biology professor. I don't know how much terminology can be "unzipped" in the article without venturing too far from sources.
- Yes I agree removing details destroys information, that's what I am against doing so and prefer factual prose.
- Exemple for the complex string of words: "The first genes of FUCA most likely encoded ribosomal components, primitive tRNA-aminoacyl transferases.", below is ChatGPT detailing how a molecular evolution professor would model it mentally:
- (Yes AI is forbidden in articles on Wikipedia, and for good reasons, but not on the talk page; at least i don't think)
- Step 1. "The first genes"
- Immediately means
- Already they're thinking about evolutionary constraints.
- Step 2. "encoded"
- They don't hear "contained."
- They hear the process:
- "Encode" is a process, not merely a relationship.
- Step 3. "ribosomal components"
- This explodes into a huge graph.
- Not
- "part of a ribosome"
- Instead
- Then another realization:
- Wait.
- If we're talking about the first genes, then the ribosome itself cannot yet be fully modern.
- So now they're imagining primitive ribosomes.
- Step 4. "primitive"
- This changes everything.
- Now every object becomes fuzzier.
