I added a multiple issues tag here, because the way this article is written (especially prior to a recent anonymous edit) reads a lot like an advertisement, and the article as-is does very little to establish notability. I'll note, however, that the original revision included a very brief paragraph mentioning awards the rum has received; had that been left in when another anonymous editor gave the article an overhaul, I wouldn't have added the notability tag.

This article definitely needs some work, but I do believe the company is notable enough for an article. I wouldn't propose deletion, but I would suggest a rework of the article. demize (t · c) 00:08, 8 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

I did my best to bring the article up to speed. I hadn't heard of this rum before, except maybe briefly saw it in stores and didn't think twice about it, so I went to doing research.

DEAR GOD.

I honestly did my best, but I don't know if a Wikipedia article could possibly be made for this brand. There are only two types of articles I see online about this rum.

1. Fluff pieces. Lots of random awards, lots of random headline-grabbing marketing stunts like hiring an AI to be the company's CEO or making a million dollar rum bottle or having 7 different "collections" of rum, 6 of which say absolutely nothing about the rum itself, it's all about what beautiful bottle it's in. These sources are often significant but almost certainly not independent. It reads like a script from Dictador (though rewritten, of course. The actual Dictador website is completely written by AI. Holy crap, the most commonly used punctuation mark is an em dash and I am not even exaggerating, it's actually that bad). All sorts of gimmicks like claiming that their rum is aged on boats in the ocean as the rocking makes the rum mature better.

2. Independent journalists absolutely tearing into this brand. Suggestions (with some actually decent evidence) that they don't have a distillery, that they import it all from Panama, that they add additives, that their "aged 12 years" and "aged 20 years" rums are not only not aged that long, but by their own admission of using solera, they couldn't possibly be aged that long. These articles are clearly independent, but quality and significance do vary, so I did my best picking the more well-known blogs and avoiding reddit discussions and forum posts, though, of course, no major publication has said anything about Dictador but the most glowing review. 𝟏𝟎𝐚𝐫𝐭𝟏 ^talk 20:31, 13 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Not to mention, usually for founding stories, I just take the company's word for it. When Brugal says that the founder immigrated to Cuba, learned to distill rum there, then moved to Puerto Plata, that seems like a completely reasonable story.

But Dictador's story is way cooler. Severo Arango y Ferro was sent from Spain to oversee trade in the colonies, and he was so powerful that he was nicknamed El Dictador, and he fell in love with the local rum, and then his great great great grandson started a distillery, and then that person's grandson found out about that story, and so in 2010, created the brand Dictador... and there is ZERO evidence of this guy existing outside of Dictador promotional material. seems legit.

I came into this with a completely neutral POV, but as a lover of rum in general, I can't help but get upset the more I research this company. 𝟏𝟎𝐚𝐫𝐭𝟏 ^talk 20:38, 13 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

I reached out to Dictador for comment before publishing, not necessarily to change what I wrote based on what they say, but at least, if they give a credible explanation, it gives me another angle to do research so hopefully I can find better information, because there truly is not very much solid information on this distillery.

Anyway I got no response, so the article as I rewrote it stands, but please feel free to look over and find better sources if you can. I am not a fan of deleting articles just because it doesn't quite meet the 3 article minimum, because it often just means that someone needs to take the effort to look into the subject more. But in this case, genuinely, there is nothing but marketing materials and enthusiast criticism to go off of. 𝟏𝟎𝐚𝐫𝐭𝟏 ^talk 19:05, 20 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
