Editing and adding to wiki page after block.
[edit]Good morning fellow Wikipedia's, My wiki page was brought to my attention and blocked for editing due to not following some policies and rules. I would like to update the page with as much detail as possible for the benefit of others using it as an encyclopaedia. I am happy to request the edits in small batches and one by one to ensure I make no further violations. Please could the following be reviewed and added to the section right at the start 'about Debra Searle'.
Debra Louise Searle MVO MBE (born 8 July 1975; née Newbury, later Veal) is a British adventurer, businesswoman, author, and keynote speaker. She came to public attention after rowing across the Atlantic Ocean solo, following the rescue of her then-husband and rowing partner, Andrew Veal, from their plywood rowing boat.[1]
Searle has been ranked the number one female motivational speaker in the Global Gurus World's Top 30 Motivational Speakers list,[2] and has also been listed among the World's Top 50 Inspirational Leaders.[3] DebraSearle75 (talk) 11:03, 24 September 2025 (UTC)
Edit request
[edit]| This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest was declined. |
I am undertaking some paid consultancy for Debra Searle, as part of which she has asked me to suggest some changes to his article, on her behalf. This supersedes the request she made, above.
1. Change "Sport" sub-heading to "Career"
2. Above "Atlantic rowing", insert:
Searle has successfully completed a range of endurance expeditions and adventurous challenges on rivers,[1] across oceans[2] and in the Arctic.[3]
3. After the existing Atlantic Row Race paragraph, add:
Following invitations to speak that resulted from her solo row across the Atlantic, Searle developed a career as a keynote speaker. Her work spans international conferences, corporate events, and a TEDx Talk.[4][5][6] She was included in Global Guru's top 30 motivational speakers of 2025.[7]
4. Below that add a subsection:
Entrepreneur
Searle has founded and co-founded several companies. These include The Well Hung Art Company, an internet-based gallery and corporate art consultancy;[5][8] Shoal Projects, adventure-based projects, including TV, book writing and motivational speaking;[9] Mix Diversity, a Diversity and Inclusion Consultancy;[10] and The Debra Searle Academy, providing online courses, and training in resilience, leadership, and personal development.[11]
5. Below that add a subsection:
Television
Searle began work in television broadcasting after her solo Atlantic row. She became a presenter for the BBC, with early credits including Grandstand.[12] She was also the subject of an episode of the BBC documentary series Extreme Lives, which highlighted extraordinary achievements in endurance and adventure. The documentary followed Searle taking part in a 460-mile non-stop wilderness canoe race down the Yukon River in Canada.[1]

Note that some of the cited sources refer to Searle using her former surname, Veal. I can suggest additional or alternative sources for many of the statements, if required.
I will also undertake some non-controversial gnoming on the article shortly. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:30, 21 November 2025 (UTC)
- The sourcing for this all seems poor. From my evaluation of the sources available previously, she is notable as an adventurer, but there's been no RS coverage since and your sources demonstrate that too with nothing reliable in the last 20 years. The language is also promotional. SmartSE (talk) 16:29, 21 November 2025 (UTC)
- I'm really amazed you'd suggest
Searle began work in television broadcasting after her solo Atlantic row. She became a presenter for the BBC, with early credits including Grandstand
based off a single mention of her contributing to one TV program. SmartSE (talk) 16:31, 21 November 2025 (UTC) - It's hardly surprising that sources about events 20+ years ago ("Yukon Quest", "the "wrong way" sailing challenge, the art gallery; starting a career in public speaking) are 20 or more years old. These are cited, respectively to the BBC, The Telegraph, The Guardian and the Sunday Times.
- Some of the more recent sources are within WP:ABOUTSLEF.
- How would you word things differently? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:20, 21 November 2025 (UTC)
- If there are no available reliable independent sources in the last 20 years, then we should not cover this period in the article. SmartSE (talk) 09:19, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- I will see what additional sources are available, and have added missing dates to some of the sources already cited above, but again, that is not what WP:ABOUTSELF says.
- And again, some of the above refers to events over 20 years ago. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:28, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- ABOUTSELF says they can be used, not that they have to be used. It also says "so long as:... The article is not based primarily on such sources." and the changes you are proposing would make a large chunk of the article dependent on such sources. WP:NPF applies here and that says "In such cases, exercise restraint and include only material relevant to the person's notability, focusing on high-quality secondary sources" and that means that we document her activities as an adventurer and that's it, unless there are other sources available. SmartSE (talk) 11:52, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- So they can be used, and the article would not be based primarily on such sources.

- Even on that, reference #1 fails verification. It is just a reference to a TV program verifying she attempted something on a river, but nothing else. We seem to be getting nowhere so I am going to decline this request. If you make another, please ensure it is entirely based off independent, reliable sources, that the text is not promotional and that the content is verifiable. SmartSE (talk) 13:59, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- The source in citation 1 is the broadcast programme, not the programme listing.
- You did not respond to my question "How would you word things differently?".
- This is five requests, not one, most of which you have not addressed. Please reopen, so that others may review them. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:54, 24 November 2025 (UTC)

My 2 cents on this:
- Changing to "Career" makes sense as an umbrella term, as the word "career" would ostensibly also cover a career in sports.
"Searle has successfully completed a range of endurance expeditions and adventurous challenges on rivers,[1] across oceans[2] and in the Arctic."
I would change this to read "Searle has completed several endurance expeditions and challenges on rivers and across oceans, including the Arctic." In the citation, I would add a quote from the show where these "river" feats are mentioned. Is it "the show" mentioning them (in voiceover narration) or does "she specifically" mention them? That should be explained in the request. Depending on the answer, "rivers" would be included or excluded (since the show is the reference for the word "rivers")"Following invitations to speak that resulted from her solo row across the Atlantic, Searle developed a career as a keynote speaker. Her work spans international conferences, corporate events, and a TEDx Talk.
I would reword this to only the following: "Following her solo row across the Atlantic, Searle began work as a keynote speaker." - and nothing more. Unless Global Guru is independently notable, I would not mention that. I would also delete ref note #4, to the Sunday Times, which I was not able to locate. The earliest mention of Searle that I could find from the Sunday Times was this article from Sept 2005 and this article from Oct 2005. Nothing from 2002.- The entire Entrepreneur section needs Wikilinks for every company mentioned that is notable. What is notable can be kept, if nothing is notable, it can be omitted.
"Searle began work in television broadcasting after her solo Atlantic row. She became a presenter for the BBC, with early credits including Grandstand. She was also the subject of an episode of the BBC documentary series Extreme Lives."
This is acceptable, but would reword to "Searle began work for the BBC as a presenter, with early credit including Grandstand. She was also the subject of an episode of the BBC documentary series Extreme Lives." given that Wikilinks are added, as I'm sure they can be. A description of the episode is not necessary if a wikilink to the show exists.- Additionally, it would be helpful if
{{Connected contributor (paid)}}were added to the bottom of the talk page header.

- Thank you. I'm happy with 1, 3, and 6. (Global Gurus my be notable, but we can park that).
- 2 is explicitly referring to land-based activity in the Arctic ("100 kilometre ski-trek across Baffin Island"), not the Arctic Ocean. 4: I disagree that we can only mention subjects with articles (or red links). How about
"These include an internet-based gallery and corporate art consultancy; an adventure-based project consultancy involving TV, book writing and motivational speaking; a diversity and inclusion consultancy; and an academy providing online courses..."
, without naming them? 5: There is no article for Extreme Lives (but it should be a red link), so some explanation is warranted. - Will you make the edits, User:Spintendo? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:18, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
- EC with your updates: I have the Sunday Times ref in a JPEG.
- I will see if I can find a suitable quote, later, but meantime the TV listing magazine (, which can be cited separately) says "Following solo ocean rower Debra Veal as she attempts her latest challenge, a 460-mile non-stop wilderness canoe race down the Yukon river in Canada." Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:34, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
- 5 TV guides are not type of high quality reliable sources that BLP demands. Likewise for #4 where there are no reliable sources. For #3, we really need full copies of the RS to check and determine WEIGHT given the problems I've already identified with the proposed content. SmartSE (talk) 23:09, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing I looked at the requested edits:
- Has been done
- None of the sources indicate that she actually completed any of these challenges. Yukon Quest says she "attempts" her latest challenge, Telegraph says "will be competing for the title", and the Fleet News says "LeasePlan Women’s Arctic Challenge will see". Also, the Fleet News article sounds like regurgitation of a press release.
- We'd need an indication that the Global Gurus ranking was notable, don't see one. Also, I can't see what the Business AM or Sunday Times articles say. The phrasing "Searle developed a career as a keynote speaker. Her work spans international conferences, corporate events..." has definitely WP:PROMO tones.
- I see little evidence the companies are notable. The Well Hung reference is a small piece at the end of the Guardian article, and the other sources are her own websites.
- It looks like the Grandstand appearance was a one-shot related to her Atlantic row ("Safe on land after her transatlantic solo row, Debra Veal presents the coverage."). Without any further evidence of appearances or activity, I can't see saying that she "began work in television broadcasting". BubbaJoe123456 (talk) 18:09, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
- @BubbaJoe123456: Thank you for taking the time to review this. You will understand my disappointment that your views are not more positive. I note that you have rejected the things which Spinetndo said, above, that he would accept.
- Fleet News may indeed regurgitate a press release (I have no information), but if so it is not one published by Debra and no issue of notability hinges upon it. It reports a statement by a company and in that sense is no different to a statement on page on that company's website, about Debra.
- Why is the notability of Global Gurus ranking an issue? No one is proposing an article about that. The same goes for Debra's companies; I made that point, and suggested listing but not naming them, in my reply to Spintendo on 8 December, but got no response.
- I take your point about WP:PROMO in the case where your referred to it; I asked on 21 November, above "How would you word things differently?", but again received no reply.
- For request 2, could we substitute "successfully completed" to "participated in"?
- With regard to request 5; surely her being the subject of an episode of the BBC documentary series Extreme Lives is indisputable? (See for other examples from the series.) Additional sources for that, to which I only recently obtained access, are Debra's Extreme Life Caught on Camera (Dundee Weekly News - 10 May 2003) and Life on the Edge (Hebden Bridge Times - Friday 09 May 2003). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:29, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
- 2. Based on the sources, we can't really say that she participated in the Arctic expedition or the round the world sailing effort, since there's nothing in the sources indicating that the expedition actually happened, or that she actually at least attempted the sail.
- 3. The concern about Global Gurus is that, if the ranking isn't widely regarded, then it really doesn't matter that she's ranked there. I could start the BubbaJoe Top Athletes ranking, but that doesn't mean it'd be worth including it in Wikipedia articles. Awards or the similar are usually not included unless the awards themselves are notable (as with her honors listed in the article).
- 4. The companies don't necessarily need to be notable from a "deserve an article" standpoint, but they need to have some significance, otherwise including them in the article would be undue.
- The fundamental issue here is that the transatlantic row is by far the most significant thing about her. Everything else is pretty minor, so adding it into the article seems like puffery/undue. BubbaJoe123456 (talk) 19:33, 7 March 2026 (UTC)
- Surely her being the subject of an episode of the BBC documentary series Extreme Lives is indisputable and significant? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:46, 7 March 2026 (UTC)
- @BubbaJoe123456: Here are some additional sources about Debra as a TV presenter, under her former name of Veal:
- The BBC say (2004) "Debra Veal [now] works as a BBC television presenter" (while the body is a comment from Debra, the statement about presenting is made in a preamble in the BBC's voice, on their own website
- Additional programmes presented by Debra: ;
- BBC listings for additional programmes presented by Debra: ("Big Strong Boys"; "Builders Sweat and Tears"; plus some already mentioned above)
- -- Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:48, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
- I've spent a lot of time looking for some sources discussing her broadcasting career and found very little. For example, the best independent coverage (i.e. excluding Indiscriminate_sources such as TV guides) was this four sentence review of Extreme Lives in a local newspaper. The first link you provide here is about the DoE awards, not her, and introductory biographies like that are generally provided by the subject, so not independent. I'm not completely against using it, but what can be sourced to it?
She worked as a BBC presenter
? The others are primary sources, so shouldn't be used to synthesise something which isn't in secondary sources. I note that BubbaJoe has broadly come to the same conclusion as I have:the transatlantic row is by far the most significant thing about her. Everything else is pretty minor
. SmartSE (talk) 17:09, 9 March 2026 (UTC)- Again you are misapplying or misunderstanding policy. The essay on indiscriminate sources to which you link is about the notability of article subjects, not the reliability for facts within articles on subjects whose notability is not disputed.
- Furthermore, it says
"Indiscriminate but independent sources may be reliable ... If a subject [in these cases, each a TV appearance] is only mentioned in indiscriminate independent sources, then it ... may be mentioned briefly in related articles"
- And yes, the first source should be used to cite "She worked as a BBC presenter". The fact that it "is about the DoE awards, not her," is irrelevant, because, again, this is not an issue of her notability, but of the source's reliability to support a single fact.
- There is no need to synthesise anything, because the (permissible, even if primary) sources support continuing that with "...on shows such as A, B and C." Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:48, 9 March 2026 (UTC)

- Those aren't great sources - the first is primary and the second is clearly a promotional piece about the book. I found an article in The Times though which I have used instead. SmartSE (talk) 13:48, 7 March 2026 (UTC)
- You have omitted the full title, the notable author of the foreword and, by not citing the book itself, which is well within policy to do, the name under which it was published, the ISBN, and the publisher. It is routine to include such metadata, and someone should please add it here. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:03, 7 March 2026 (UTC)

- It also says
"She also has a lucrative new career as a speaker and recently shared a platform with Rory Bremner and Mikhail Gorbachev."
, so we should now be able to include as a minimum "Following her solo row across the Atlantic, Searle developed a career as a public speaker." Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:50, 10 March 2026 (UTC)

- My bad, I missed that part. That seems reasonable to me, I take your word for it that the source says that. I'm not sure exactly where it would fit in here -- the way the article divides her career into one race 20 years ago and "Other" seems a bit odd to me.
