Carter was born the illegitimate son of a half-Eskimo woman in Nome, Alaska. He was adopted by a former police and fire chief in Nome.

It would be very helpful to know if this police and fire chief in question was W. W. Laws.

If we are talking about W. W. Laws, this statement would appear bogus. Laws died in Nome in the summer of 1967, which would coincide with Carter being placed somewhere perhaps due to the lack of a parent around? RadioKAOS – Talk to me, Billy 21:25, 8 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Fyrael, thanks for your message. That was a while ago, so I can't exactly recreate my thinking, but here are some thoughts: clearly I had some doubts about whether or not it was reliable (hence the tag with the ?, "may be unreliable", rather than something more definitive). The topic area of serial killers is dominated by low-quality sensationalist writing in general. This particular reference is published by Loompanics, whose Wikipedia article does not strongly suggest that it would have been subjected to rigorous scrutiny for factual veracity.
