Claim of Jewish descent

[edit]

The VRT team recently received ticket:2021090510002601, which states that the identification of Walentas as being of Jewish descent is incorrect. While I can't disclose any specific details about the email due to the non-disclosure agreement, I'm satisfied based on the nature of the ticket that the complaint is credible.

Upon reviewing the complaint I found that the claim is sourced to this article, in which the only mention of anything related to Judaism is this statement from Walentas regarding protestors lobbying against one of his building developments: “They’re just stupid, insulated people,” David says when I ask him about the carousel controversy. “The truth is that the Old Guard up the Heights are racists and anti-Semites, if you really want to know. They don’t want anything to happen to disturb their little community. They don’t want shvartzes walking through the community to get to the park.” Today, he says, “the Heights people love the carousel.” This statement is far from a clear claim that he is Jewish, and to make that claim based on it is original research and a violation of WP:BLP - it can be read as characterizing the protestors as generally backwards and ignorant, without making any claim as to Walentas' ethnic affiliation. However, the statement has been restored by Patapsco913 without comment.

I would like to encourage Patapsco913 to discuss their edits here so that this does not have to be escalated to another venue such as WP:BLPN. Spicy (talk) 01:29, 6 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

You are right. Sorry, I did not mean to revert your edit but rather to move the reference down to support his development of the Domino Sugar Refinery. I added a citation that his father was of Lithuanian descent. Not sure why I did not find that before. He has had an interesting life.Patapsco913 (talk) 04:46, 6 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

He "saved his money" working for 15k a year...and bought a $600,000 building?

[edit]

... Jeff Byers , whose family were Graces. His mother was a Grace. So he got a job there because of his family, and they became friends. So we wound up -- I wanted to get into the real estate business. I tried to borrow $10,000 from City Bank. They threw me out. And I was like -- I had a job. I was working for Pete Murray Mitchell. I was making $15,000 a year or something, and so Jeff -- Jeff became a partner, and HE raised some money from friends and family, and we bought a crappy little building up on 78 Manhattan Avenue, 104th and Manhattan Avenue. ... "I think we paid like 5 or $600,000 for it. This was 19 -- let's see. We started in -- when did we start, 33:00'60 -- JANE WALENTAS: 7 -- '68. DAVID WALENTAS: --'67, '68 --"

seems like "saving his money" doesn't actually have any relevance to him buying a building for that amount. In fact, he doesn't even mention saving his money, the way he describes it Jeff paid.
