The word county precedes name

I don't argue that it is the practice to say the word "County" before the county's name when talking about Ireland—that's what I always hear. But why is this the practice? Surely Wikipedia and Wiktionary are not the only places where this is mentioned. Is there any other good book or article that says this and that could be used as a reliable source? (There's this page on Quora, but it doesn't count as a reliable source for a Wikipedia article.)

If this page were Counties in Northern Ireland, I'd accept Londonderry, being Ireland centric this page should say Derry or at least Derry/Londonderry - with some info added to explain why. Butchy10 (talk) 14:37, 1 April 2026 (UTC)

Not Done. The name of the county is County Londonderry, always has been. County Derry is purely a colloquialism. County was established as County Londonderry and its name was not officially changed to County Derry at any time. That some people call it by a different name isn't relevant.
