Pain cure (historical)?

I had the song in my head, so I came here hoping for more information about castor oil as a pain treatment. "...though we know that castor oil always cures the pain," as described in a list of various oil's applications in a humor song.

I feel like my main point of reference about castor oil is from other historical sources where children were given castor oil, not specifically as a punishment, but because of its touted health benefits, eg a spoonful before bed every night or something like that. Hair care

I came here looking for details on why castor oil is good for your hair. I find tons of articles like this one:

And it seems to be a pretty well-accepted use of the oil. I'm not sure about real research backing this up, but was surprised there was no mention of it under the "human uses" section.
