Bozidar Brazda

Bozidar Brazda (born 1972 in Cambridge, Canada) is a Canadian-born artist. He lives and works in New York.¹

Biography

Bozidar Brazda is the son of Slovak-Canadian folk musician Andrew Brazda² and the grandson of the award-winning journalist and writer Andrej Brázda-Jankovský.³ He has exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)⁴ and the Whitney Museum of American Art.⁵ His work has been featured in Artforum, Vogue.com, Interview, Flash Art, The New York Times, and Art in America.²⁶

Parallel to his visual art and writing practices, Brazda plays in the post-punk band Diet Choke with model and singer Ruby Aldridge and artist Shawn Kuruneru.⁶ In 2023, he co-wrote the track “Bad Days” with Julian Casablancas and Promiseland.⁷ In 2019, he performed as an opening act for Beck, and later that year for Amyl and the Sniffers.²² ²³

Work and Exhibitions

Brazda’s multidisciplinary practice includes installation, wall text, music, and print-based media. His early work addressed themes of Eastern European identity and punk subculture.⁸ Later projects adopted a more minimal and Pop-influenced aesthetic.

In 2004, he exhibited The Journalist in New York.¹² Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Holland Cotter described the piece as “seriously off-beat thinking,”¹² and compared Brazda’s work to that of Paul Thek.¹²

He participated in Greater New York at MoMA PS1 in 2005,⁴ and in the 2008 Whitney Biennial, where he presented Radioff, a mixed-media installation.⁵ The New York Times featured the piece as the lead image in its review.¹⁵ Collaborators on Radioff included musician Ian MacKaye of Fugazi.¹⁶

In 2017, Brazda launched a capsule clothing line featuring rubber shirts and latex “ADIDAS” socks, which was reviewed in Interview and W magazines.¹⁰ ¹¹

In 2021, he curated a group exhibition in Woodstock, New York, featuring works by Rosemarie Trockel, Terence Koh, and Shawn Kuruneru.¹⁸

He has exhibited at David Zwirner Gallery,²⁷ Haswellediger & Co., Reena Spaulings Fine Art, Martos Gallery, and Bortolami Gallery.¹⁷ He has also shown in European venues, including galleries in Berlin and Vienna.¹⁷

Writing

Brazda has contributed essays, reviews, and catalogue texts to magazines such as Dazed, Artnet, and Flash Art.¹⁹ His writing has included essays on American conceptual artist Cady Noland.²⁰ In 2011, he wrote an open article for Artnet calling for the release of imprisoned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei.²¹ In 2012, he interviewed poet John Giorno for Dazed magazine.²⁸
