Structure

Not sure about the sodium form, but the experimentally determined crystal structure of azidothymidine (AZT) has the three nitrogens in a linear arrangement. I'm not sure how to edit this, but I believe that each of the terminal nitrogen atoms would have a delta negative charge, instead of a full negative charge, since the molecule overall has a full negative charge and -1+-1 does not equal -1. How can sodium azide reduce sodium ions

It was mentioned that, due to the highly reducing nature of azide ions, sodium ion impurities in sodium metal can be removed via the addition of sodium azide. This, however, does not make chemical sense, as one can see that sodium azide would only be capable of reducing the sodium ions within itself and not any more sodium ion impurities. Also it would be implausible that corresponding anions to such sodium ion impurities such as chloride will simply disappear after the reductive action of particular agents.
