Unreferenced content spun off in 2005

This article was created in July 2005 at 52kb (diff; ES: Pasting in User:Geogre's text from Augustan literature to create spin-off article) and remains entirely unreferenced. Bishonen, I don't expect you to remember this, and Geogre (talk · contribs) has been inactive since 2009, so I am afraid this is on you. Why now? Cuz of this Help Desk discussion. You were also active at Augustan literature in July/August 2005 (maybe more); see e.g. 16:12, 1 July 2005 (diff): −31,997 – Spinning off Augustan prose. You also made seven minor contributions to Augustan poetry in July 2005 right after a major rewrite/expansion there by Geogre; that article has general references but no citations. In 2005, Mathglot? Surely that wasn't me. Hasn't every cell in my body been regenerated since then? Or maybe not the teeth. Seriously, I don't remember it. But those articles were indeed written by User:Geogre, and my own contributions were very minor. Considering our various academic interests and our Wikipedia friendship, I've no doubt that it was at his request that I did the "spinning off". (Why didn't he do it himself? Dunno.) The references... well, things were different then. It was possible, even though certainly in many quarters frowned on, to write Wikipedia articles without them, or only with, as you say, general references but no citations. I'm afraid that was very much the way Geogre liked to do it. Sorry, but I'm not up for adding references at this time. 18th century literature used to be my subject, but more the drama and the novel, not so much essays or, re the poetry article, poetry. I can tell, though, that the novel part of this article was also written by Geogre, not me. Also, I'm no longer, since my retirement from academe, well read in new work on the period altogether. Yes, we were creating problems for the future at that time, Geogre and I, but there's not really anything I can do to solve those problems now. It's a pity, I'm a little ashamed of it, but there it is. Bishonen | tålk 10:16, 3 November 2025 (UTC).

Thanks for filling in the backstory. Well, I am not surprised at all. I'm aware of the very different culture with respect to references at the time and figured it was going to be pretty much as you said. It does raise an interesting question about SPLIT (also CCW) and BURDEN and who the latter applies to in a case like this, but that is o/t here. I wouldn't worry about it, but it just leaves a gnawing feeling about what we are going to do with all those pre-2006 unreferenced articles, and indeed, whether they should be treated any differently from a recent one that is over the limit for draftification.
