Castle Howard fountain NOT at Great Exhibition
[edit]I've never edited a Wikipedia page before, but I have studied the 1851 Great Exhibition in great detail. The citation for the Castle Howard fountain being there is a printed document (& I haven't been able to locate a copy of that document). Other web pages make the same claim, but I suspect they have lifted the information from this Wikipedia page. I personally have a large quantity of contemporary 1851 documentation from the Great Exhibition - some of this there are online copies.
John Thomas did exhibit a large fountain at the Great Exhibition. It is listed in the official catalogue (https://archive.org/details/officialdescrip2grea/page/853/mode/2up?q=galatea), which includes an engraving (on the page before this catalogue entry) which shows it surmounted by a statue of Acis & Galatea (not Atlas). There are detailed floor plans (reproduced in Vol 4 of the catalogue: https://archive.org/details/b21495361_0004/page/1582/mode/2up although I have a high resolution scan of the original document provided to me by the 1851 Commission archives) showing all large fountains - all of these can be cross-referenced to the catalogue confirming there was only one fountain by John Thomas.
Other contemporary documentation confirms this fountain was explicitly ordered for Preston Hall Aylesford (https://archive.org/details/crystalpalaceexh0000unse/page/94/mode/2up?q=preston). There is a photograph of the fountain at Preston Hall which match the illustration in the exhibition catalogue (see part way down this article: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2827540/How-developers-plan-turn-crumbling-Tudor-mansion-family-home-Henry-VIII-s-fifth-wife-dozens-luxury-flats-fit-king.html).
I'm concerned that much of the evidence I have is 'negative' - in the sense I have evidence the John Thomas fountain at the Great Exhibition went to Preston Hall, rather than having evidence of where the Castle Howard fountain came from (it is a John Thomas fountain, and a beautiful one too, and may well have been ordered as a result of seeing the one at the Great Exhibition). Is it worth editing the page?
