[edit]"Philo teaches that all men are born free" may be loose paraphrase of That Every Good Man Is Free, unsourced, and undated within the decade.
Mauretania's annexation appears in AD 42 as "Algeria and Morocco", and again at AD 44. Which is correct? And needs a source. NevinThompson (talk) 20:24, 4 September 2026 (UTC)
Manning (2008) as the source for the AD 40 population figure
[edit]The 247 million figure for AD 40 in the Demographics section is cited to a 2008 post on Historian on the Warpath, a personal blog. I haven't found work on historical demography by this author published by a reliable independent publisher, so it doesn't appear to meet the expert exception at WP:SPS. I've tagged rather than removed it, in case someone knows of published work I've missed.
Two related points:
- The same figure also appeared in the lead. I've removed it there, since the lead
should summarize the section rather than duplicate it.
- The section itself says demographers avoid single-year estimates for antiquity.
Giving prominence to one blog reconstruction that does exactly that may be undue regardless of the sourcing question.
Unless there's an objection, I'll remove the sentence in a week and leave the sourced range for AD 1. NevinThompson (talk) 02:49, 5 September 2026 (UTC)
